This is NOT a static planet, people just have a hard time wrapping their heads around the scale of geologic time and the massive change that can occur in it. I've taken shade under precariously balanced boulders in the desert which could have fallen at any moment- in the next 100,000 years.

Even a basic understanding of geology will make a person feel like their lives are just an instant in time.
