In reality the air in the atmosphere is actually slowing the rocket down, whereas the near vaccum of space lets it go much easier because it doesnt have to push through anything.. For example trying to run on a road vs trying to run chest deep in water

So it's the direct opposite of what you are saying heh

When there is nothing to push against, all you have left is pushing against yourself by expelling mass. This provides very little thrust.

It's simple to understand

Rocket engines push against the ground during launch and then they push against the air while in the earth's atmosphere. They slowly lose thrust as the air gets thinner until they are in the vaccum of space. When in space there is nothing to push against so they must rely solely on the thrust generated by pushing against the mass of it's own fuel. This is a very weak thrust.

This is where you are making a big big mistake. It's not about pushing against anything at all, that's just not how it works.. so your logic is based off a totally faulty premise

An explosion flings the thing that is exploding in all directions, regardless of whether it is in a vacuum.

Now suppose the explosion happens in a small chamber with only one opening.

It is logical that all the force of the expanding exposion will be directed through that opening and Newtons laws will come into play and the chamber will be moved equally in the opposite direction.

Rockets operate by thrust which is a force that doesn't involve pushing against anything. If you can't understand that ancient knowledge, then there is little hope for you ;)

The explosion is pushing against the wall. It is pushing against the wall of the chamber in which the explosion took place and the direction it is pushing in, is the direction of the opening. The exact force that the explosion is pushing against the chamber wall is the force that moves the chamber.

Imagine you are an explosion about to happen. Go stand againt the wall and explode. Push off against the wall. You will bounce of the walls in the direction of the open door.

Now if you were in space, the force that you pushed off against the wall, would have moved the space ship.
