Interesting topic Rachel. I've only just touched on this subject thru the interesting research of Danny Wilten. Wilten investigates a wide range of philosophies and religious symbolism. I would say that he can't really be nailed-down for what he actually believes, since his research is so leading edge.
Here is a video (I haven't watched it yet-will soon, tho!)

This video is a lecture by the great philosopher,
Manly P Hall. His voice is a little dry, but I think he spells out some of the basics. The tape is from the 1930's! Oldie but goodie!
