National Park Service Spending $20mil To Keep Middle Class Whites Out of Parks | |

THey have it too good in USA living in big USA cities. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56816621 No, blacks are generally lazy. It takes a lot more energy to go camping than to go to Cracker Barrel. I'm tired of waiting, somebody push the damn button already! Keep your 72 virgins, give me one old biker chick. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 2234637 United States 12/04/2014 03:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Canada has something like this. Last time I was in a provincial park I read some thing about new Canadians getting free camping vouchers and programs for lessons and such. I wouldn't agree with spending vast amounts of money on such endeavours, but I certainly agree with a push to get people out into the great outdoors. It isn't about keeping people out, it appears to be an attempt to get people interested and in a broader sense, to assimilate into the culture. I say camping is good for people, but some need help. I've taught camping skills to friends from overseas, honestly without a bit of help... well there were cougar tracks, a open fire pit, rain, rules, fishing, a boat etc etc. They never would have dared it alone. You have obviously not camped next to a lowlife group of people. Loud rap musin or other trashy music, cars pulling in and out all night, people getting drunk and obnoxious, fights and trash and empty beer and alcohol all over in the morning. I even had to listen to trashy lovemaking outside my tent on the picnic table next to me and when I confronted them to take inside I was threatened all night that I was going to get an ass kicking when I got up in the morning. I was not to worried but my young kids were. I've also seen one of my favorite secluded camping spots ruined by a big group of Hispanics after a long weekend in the sierras. Trash diapers beer caps and trails ruined. A person with no respect for nature should not be given a free trip there! |

ssle User ID: 50535466 United States 12/04/2014 03:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why is this study, like every other ridiculous Federal study, focusing on race? The parks are “generally skewed to highly educated, middle-class white Americans, and (have) relatively low attendance by minority groups,” he said. You could remove the "white" part and this would become a socio-economic problem. When put that way, it isn't even a question. It's already explained by theories relating to the culture of poverty. People of lower socio-economic statuses don't plan well on how to spend their cash, and often blow through it in short order when it hits their wallets. Give a middle-class family, $10,000 for a vacation, and he'll stretch that dollar as far as they can so they can spread it out over the breadwinner's entire 2 weeks of vacation time. Or, they may take that money and buy an RV, go on a shorter vacation this year and a long one the next. Give an impoverished family $10,000 for a vacation and they'll plan a 3 day trip to an amusement park resort. Everyone is worth knowing. Everything is worth learning. You're never too good. You're never not good enough. |
Ralph--a house dog User ID: 65749434 United States 12/04/2014 03:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I believe the park service defined the problem when that guy said the parks are “generally skewed to highly educated, middle-class white Americans, and (have) relatively low attendance by minority groups,” Many minorities are not educated enough to even figure out how to camp, or to learn anything about the natural wonders around them at such places and consequentially have no interest in going there. It actually is more of a social class issue; lower class WHITE people don't visit national parks very much either, for pretty much the same reasons. These guys had like two generators, lighting up the night like it was their backyard. Blasting music. Screaming all night. Babies wandering around in diapers completely unlooked after. Anonymous Coward User ID: 62323787 United States 12/04/2014 04:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Initially, RSG will be helping the Park Service to figure out what it can do to draw a broader social, economic and racial mix of visitors to national parks, Lawson said. “One of the biggest questions right now for the Park Service is addressing the question of social relevance of national parks in an increasingly multicultural society,” Lawson said. The parks are “generally skewed to highly educated, middle-class white Americans, and (have) relatively low attendance by minority groups,” he said. Quoting: Boris the Cat The data collected under the studies, Lawson explained, will help guide the Park Service in its goal to “increase relevance among the broad American public.” The challenge of drawing a broader diversity of visitors to national parks is not new and has dogged the Park Service for some time. The federal agency has periodically conducted surveys and has known that the ethnic and social backgrounds of visitors to the parks does not reflect the demographics of the U.S. population at large: One survey, by the University of Wyoming in 2011, found only about one in five visitors was nonwhite and only one in 10 was Hispanic, according to an article in The New York Times.
