So how does unemployment work?
I've been unemployed now for a few days. I've been at my computer looking for jobs all day long. All the jobs seem to be bait and switch. I just got off the phone with a lady who recruits for a trucking company. They say it's a yard hostler or local job. But when you go to the job it never fails to say that that job was just filled. If you call the number they will try to tell you that they have other over the road jobs instead. If I ask them if I can put them down as a contact for my unemployment they tell me I am refusing work cause I don't want to drive OTR. I can not drive OTR anymore. I'm too old and have too many health conditions. So is she right?

You need to apply directly to your unemployment office. Then they will contact your old employer. The old employer has unemployment insurance they pay into so you get benefits. They can refute the claim and then you can appeal it.

Its a big circle jerk. But you shouldnt be having any contact with your old employer about unemployment benefits whatsoever.

Re: So how does unemployment work?
You can fill out the form online.

You'll get a notice in the mail in about
3-4 wks letting you know if you were
approved, and how much you'll get in
total, as well as how much every 2 wks.

Bi-Weekly you will get a form to fill
out where you have to lust jobs you
applied to. You have to list a minimum
of 5-10. DO NOT LIST THE COMPANY
YOU MENTIONED IN THIS THREAD.

You also do not have to give a phone
number, just company name and
location is good enough.

EDD, does not research to see if you
actually applied to said job. They don't
have the manpower to do that. Trust me.

And I agree with the first Reply,
Don't contact your last employer.

Good Luck !

Thanks for the reply. I have had no contact at all with my last employer. Not sure where that is coming from. It's too bad that the system is looking after my own best interests. employers can do a bait and switch and then say you are refusing employment if you're not interested in a job that is not in your best interests to take. I did over the road trucking for two years. It gave me ulcers. They have cell towers now that just line the highways. It's like living next door to a cell tower. My health suffered and I became electrically sensitive.

Not trolling you, but "electrically sensitive" might be hard sell to the average gov't. employee reviewing claims, etc. Just a thought. Good luck to you.

Re: So how does unemployment work?
Just a hypothetical here. Let's say I was a Ph.D in some field or another. I went to apply for a job as a researcher or something like that. The person at the human resources office says, No, we don't have any of the jobs that you are looking for but we do have this job as a janitor." It's kind of the same thing. This person is thinking about themselves and their best interests. They get paid to fill job vacancies. The lady at that trucking agency was mad. She said don't ever call her back. what does that mean? does it mean she not only doesn't have the job that was advertised and which I called about and she also never will?

Oh, yeah, employers can totally do that.
that you apply to work for. But, they have
no bearings on your unemployment, your
last, most recent employer does. But as I
mentioned, don't include this company on
the list of companies you applied to. ;)

Also, where if says list any monies earned
weather taxes were taken out, OR NOT
don't fill that out.... UNLESS you worked
for someone and taxes were taken out.

Again, EDD does not research anything
unless it was reported to the IRS.

Friday was my last day worked. I took the weekend off. But Monday I immediately started looking. I spent the morning at the unemployment office. Sunday I applied for the benefits online. That way I didn't have any work for that week to report as sunday is the first day of a new week. I haven't heard back yet but I'm expecting something in the mail here pretty soon. It's been quite a long time since I filed for unemployment. a couple decades. So I'm wondering if anything has changed.

Re: So how does unemployment work?
I can see where someone could get mad and say I was using the system if I wasn't really looking for a job. This is what she accused me of, as well as accusing me of having talked to her before which I hadn't. It's just not right. They got you by the balls as soon as you let them know you are drawing unemployment. Then they push shit jobs in your face and tell you you are using the system and not really looking for a job.

Re: So how does unemployment work?
Would you work for somebody who baits and switches? You now know that honesty is not something you'll never see from that company. Every single yard hostler or city driving job I clicked on was just filled within the past few hours or the past day or so. Supposedly. They know drivers want off the road and are looking for those kinds of jobs. so that is how they advertise their jobs. I've actually worked for a company before that I hired on as a city driver. But on the first day of work they told me that job was given to somebody else and I was now a road driver. If you advertise a city driving job or a hostler job and then you try to switch when I call up then I know you are not someone I'd like to work for.

Uh the correct answer? Unemployment is handled on the governments end not the last employer. The employer can refute the claim though and try to get benefits denied to you for whatever reason they can dream up. Its happened to me. I was lied all over about my work ethic just so they didnt have to pay benefits.

I'm not too worried about that. They let all the drivers go except some of the hostlers who hostle for them. We all got layed off. I don't see how they would say anything that would keep me from getting benefits. I didn't quit.

Yea my point is...the only communication you should be having about unemployment is directly with the unemployment office, that was all. I wish you luck. Its like pulling teeth...
