Complain all you want about Phillips, Oxy Pet, Haliburton, etc, but they all employ millions of people and purchase billions of dollars worth of products from suppliers that employ millions of people. You knock over that first domino and 2008 will look like a wet dream. IF we were going to drive the price of oil down it would have been better to do it over a couple of decades, except that at some point we're going to run out anyway. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 65716039 United Kingdom 12/10/2014 08:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In 2008 there was a shortage of refining capacity compared to demand. In the years since, demand has collapsed so much, that 4 (four) oil refineries have closed just in the UK. If people can't afford to buy it, it doesn't matter if it is $5 a barrel. In the future, with existing technology, ultra clean synthetic liquid fuels can be produced quite cheaply, with Plasma Gasification, from waste. There's a guy in America building three plants to produce synthetic diesel. He is buying in the natural gas feedstock to do it, rather than using free waste, and even so he can produce a gallon of synthetic diesel for about $1. If all the annual waste in Britain was put through Plasma Gasification and a F-T syngas unit with it, just the ultra clean diesel would be about four times what America uses a year (with free feedstock). Plus there would be ultra clean gasoline, jet fuel, and fuel gas. Metals production from that waste, would amount to about 16.5 million tons a year. Feedstock can include Municipal Solid Waste, Industrial waste, Chemical waste, coal, oil, gas, CO2, old tyres, old landfill, sewage sludge, biomass, incinerator ash, and even seawater (about 25% moisture content is ok). Seawater has about 140 times more CO2 in it than the atmosphere (why the US Navy is going to make jet fuel out of it), so a good boost for hydrocarbon production in the process. [link to www.westinghouse-plasma.com] Oil at a sensible price will still have a use for blending with feedstock. If the price isn't sensible, then other things can be used instead until the price IS sensible. It's time to send the arabs back to camel power. |
