another oil question for the pros.....? please and thank you
Please, SOMEONE explain the following. PLEASE.

Yes, we all know, like everything else, oil has an actual bottom line price in order to get produced. Same thing for gasoline and all of the oil products.

However, when ANYONE talked about the price of gas over the past 30+ years, we always heard that the price of gas and oil is directly related to the "INSTABILITY of the middle east and other foreign nations in turmoil".

Its been the narrative for a very very long time.

Now here we are 2014, in the usa and "allied world", we have enough oil production CAPABILITY to not have to worry about foreign oil from nations in turmoil. We also have enough oil for several decades, more than enough time to find alternatives.

Why are we letting these lower prices shut down and destroy our industry?? Why is "doom on"?

Isnt the goal to get energy independence from these
"horrible, corrupt, and evil" nations?

We finally start doing that and now everyone is chicken little. Everyone is screaming doom at the top of their lungs.....Quite frankly, I don't understand it. Why allow this as an "intelligent" society? What type of senseless system could create such a scenario?

The way i see it, shut down imports from the places causing problems and instability, encourage oil industry in allied areas that are free from turmoil and all the other nonsense that allows for excuses, spend what needs to get spent to extract, produce, and make a fair profit, and charge a fair price to the consumer for gasoline and the other products.

I simply don't understand all the doom, it seems common sense, it seems like basic simple logic. It seems children should have the capability to figure this out, or am i missing something??

I look forward to knowledgeable answers and grass roots solutions to this problem.

Most importantly I thank GLP for allowing this discussion.

Those areas with the instability just so happen to be the areas where it is cheapest to produce oil dogpile

Yes there are short term price spikes/dips, but in the long run you'd still find it's cheaper to buy from them otherwise we wouldn't continue do so.

What if they know when or approximately Yellowstone is gonna blow?

or If an Asteroid is going to whack us.

Yellowstone or Asteroid would be climate chaos for sure.

If 10 more large volcanoes erupt, that may be climate chaos.

No Food would be chaos.

OP, the cost per barrel of a lot oil producers in the US is quite high. Many wells that were profitable a few months ago are now losing money. As a result, most of these wells will shut down and jobs will be lost.

The easy to get to oil is all but used up already. If the price is controlled by OPEC and they keep it below cost of production in other countries, the other countries will be forced to buy foreign oil.

yes i get that

they flood the markets with easy to extract cheap oil

drop the price

crush our industry

then "all of a sudden" more "turmoil"

prices go up to 130 a barrel again due to "instability" and the fact that we destroyed our industry.

we end up paying so much for oil that every news story talks about how the high price of oil is destroying our economy.

I guess my question is why dont we maybe spend a bit more to extract and have long term stability and a consistent predictable and stable energy price, rather than playing the unstable fluctuating price game with evil places?

isnt that what logic calls for? isnt that a pretty simple concept or is there something im missing?

Oil producers like Saudis will only benefit from this.

-Less competition. Lower price/barrel makes shale oil and fracking unprofitable.

-Increase demand. Lower prices encourage people to drive cars again.

-Gaining political favors. Even though the shale oil industry is being destroyed, the west still likes the pressure this puts on the Russians.

Ok, I will try to help...you do research on the oil dollar and it will all make sense. I worked 23 years in oil and gas exploration. The higher the price per barrel oil went the better I could afford it.

You should know that gasoline, diesel, kerosene and home heating oil are the leftovers from crude oil after all of the marketable products are stripped away. Check that out too.

Gasoline was discarded until a use for it was found. There is no reason it should be priced as it is. Think about it, there are 42 gallons in a barrel of crude. If that was only gasoline and no other products were refined out 42 gallons at $2.50 a gallon is how much, yep $105.00 a barrel return. You should also know they recover natural gas along with the crude and which is also sold. Are you starting to see the truth here yet?

Cheers!

That is not true.

One, we don't have enough to provide for our own needs.
Two, we don't have enough to provide for our friends needs.

==========

Most of what you said is out to lunch.

But its what you didn't say that is key.

The Saudi's over production is kicking ass on three enemies.
1) Iran,
2) Russia,
3) Shale oil.

Obama likes all three getting beat up too.
