I know this is a bit off topic but your post just reminded me of when, way back in 1984, I was inadvertently the cause of a major hissy fit by the owner of the Los Angeles Sentinel Newspaper and the Wave group that I worked for at the time. This actually resulted in the Wave being kicked out of the National Black Publishers Association. Not to mention a big row in Sacramento that got the Advertising Agency in hot water with California's political masters.

The main distinctions between the two are that the Sentinel actually had a Black owner, but it also had a low circulation and was a bad advertising buy in this particular case. The Wave had a Black editor, but as you may have guessed was White owned, so it was able to be a member of the association. And it was big with 14 local editions at the time, there was a huge printing press that did, I think 280,000 copies a week. Anyway a fleet of 3 ton flatbed trucks with high sides went down every street in South and Central L.A. and other places and really covered the Black and Hispanic areas. Four of the locals where in Culver City, Hawthorne and other mainly (at the time) White areas and I mostly worked on them along with a couple of other people.

So one morning I was skimming through my copy of the Los Angeles Times partly looking for advertising leads to follow up on...when I stumbled upon a little story. The L.A. Times was very anti lottery and the public had just voted for a State Lottery. And in the story they mentioned the big advertising agency that had just won this very lucrative account. It was only a couple of paragraphs and my instincts told me that no one else at the Wave would pick up on it. We where (in a genteel kind of way) treated as inferiors. So yeah we where looking for a chance to stick it to em.

Actually the working atmosphere wasn't too bad with most of the Black sales reps being of the middle class, but there where undercurrents and a fair sprinkling of arseholes. So anyway I had a quiet word with my boss who worked the Hispanic market and the Senior Sales Rep. I pitched it to them that I was sure no one in the Waves upper management had picked up on it. And that I reckoned that there was a good chance that I could work quietly and land the account without anyone else finding out until the day that I got it.

Any good ad sales rep will tell you that it's a minefield selling stuff like this. Double trucks in all 14 papers at the full rate. That's the kind of stuff that sales peoples dreams are made of. That was about $20,000 a pop, in 1984 dollars. So anyway I made and received about twenty phone calls and sent out five or six full media packages, each time to people higher up in the hierarchy.

My basic sales pitch was truthful, in that we did have by far the highest Black and Hispanic readership in Greater Los Angeles, and that in business terms we where the correct publisher to go with.

So anyway a couple of months later I got back in the office around 4 PM which avoids the rush hour and there it was sitting on my desk. With all the paperwork with my name on it...and a 15% sales commission. I got on well with my boss who was still out making his rounds, so I sat on it because I knew that he would want to be in on the fun.

You never saw the likes of it. Senior executives, the editor, the publisher and a dozen other people all really upset because they knew nothing about it until we spring it on them and they reckoned that the sales commission should go to them. In fact I bet they still talk about it today.

That was the first explosion. The second one followed a few days later when the owner of the Los Angeles Sentinel got his copy of that weeks Wave. I can't think why but for some unknown reason I was forced out a few months later. But I got a nice motorcycle and a ten month holiday exploring the Sierra Nevadas out of it.

Maybe some time I'll tell you the story of how in the 1970s I worked for 26 weeks one year and 27 weeks the following year on the old Southern Pacific Railways until I got laid off. And became eligible for $300 a week in 1970s dollars in Railroad Retirement benefits for a nine month period. I'd only been back in the States for 3 years. All I had to do was to sign on every couple of weeks at the Oakland Yard. I got some serious fishing out of that.

Therein lies the problem these days. If you become a target you can never win. Even when the last court of appeal finds in your favor and their are no more courts for the vindictive scumbags to file with, you do not WIN. You will be left demoralized, your family will likely be in tattered ruins and you will be financially destitute.

Things need a major reset. Until you watch someone get dragged through the three ring circus that the judicial system has become and personally dealt with the multiple layers of US law enforcement bureaucracy, you have no idea what these people go through.
