Regardless of Ferguson, NY or Cleveland....how do we really feel about the police?
I think most of us here respect the honest and decent police officers out there....in my case, even the PA State Trooper that gave me a speeding ticket last week! But I feel the reality is most/many police officers do feel a resentment towards the citizens, and have taken an "us against them" mentality. I was at a family party recently where one guest was a police officer, at the local level, from a city in NJ. He spoke mostly about how corrupt the police force was, in not only his city, but neighboring cities as well. Police covering up the wrongdoings of other cops....shocking in some of the stories he described.

But I feel the bigger issue is our local police becoming more and more militarized in their weapons, vehicles and training. These local departments have to justify their having these military items by actually using them. Does this motivate them to come up with scenarios, justified or not, where they have to use these weapons and vehicles? Obviously if these local depts. want to keep these machine guns, and armored vehicles, they have to show where they actually use them. Is this not setting the citizens up for a very hostile police force?? This explains all the false drug raids we read about, almost, on a weekly basis. I remember during the Wako standoff, they reported this one time, and it justified bringing in the military....Janet Reno announced they believed there was a Meth lab in the basement of the church..... Only stated one time and then never mentioned again...of course because there was none. But this, legally, allowed the military to take over the standoff.

So, how do we all feel about local police becoming more militarized, when they don't have the proper training? Is this setting up a very standoff-ish attitude toward the citizens??

Can't judge a whole occupation or industry by a couple of bad apples. And law enforcement WAS built on the foundation to protect and serve. But this day and age, more than a few bad apples on the force and that 'us against them' mentality is certainly prevalent

yea theres cities thatre training cops to be aggressive - but here where i live the cops follow rights.

my family is nyc police/firemen & LI police

and the majority be - that cops will react to any threat.

dont give them a reason. plain & simple.
political correctness is a doctrine.... fostered by a delusional, illogical minority...... and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media; which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

The police state down south has turned many against them. One cant drive down the road a mile without seeing multiple people pulled over. Speed traps abound. Then theres the unconstitutional roadblocks, no knock search warrants, trigger happy roid raging cops. Its bad down there.

I was one for 23 years. I was a college graduate. I was the only one. Most of my co-workers only went to 8th Grade.
In later years, things improved. Higher pay in tough times brought more college graduates. So from the late 70s to the early 90s Crime was down, incidents were down, all violent acts were dramatically down and our methods of detection just became better and better with the advent of the computer age.
But now---cities are strapped for funds. They have stagnated the true growth while demanding the reduction of personnel. The dangers have increased and the job tends now to attract "Urban Cowboys" with low IQs who are just interested in kicking people around a few years and then getting a real job.
The 30 year men are gone, the 5 year fairy princes are now your police. When they screw up, which they always will, They are fired. These are the type of guys drawn to deadly weapons and like to dish out some trouble. They DON'T know the law, frequently violate civil rights, and depend on you being complacent.

I feel there needs to be major changes. I am for JUSTICE. I am not for justice if it means the government takes the reigns. We know how that worked out for people in history.

Hold the bad cops accountable by locking them up. If all you get is a desk job for a couple weeks, everyone will want to do it. Take that away from them. Take their coveted freedom. I bet the police will police themselves after a few go bye bye.

They actually gloat about the roadblocks. Heaven forbid you had a glass of wine with dinner at the restaurant. Dont feel secure going out anymore, let alone at home if they so deem to break your door in and kill your dogs, or you while at it. Old white people have been killed this way people. There needs a solution!

Cops are fine. It's the violence prone blacks that seem to be the issue. When 12% of the population commit over half of the crime, what are you supposed to do? Ignore it for PC's sake.

Wake up sheeple, before it's too late.

That's just the thing, many don't but they still end up getting harrassed and arrested not because they have committed any crime but purely because the police have arrest quotas they need to fill for fear of losing funding for their department.

Eric garner being the case in point. He was arrested some 30 odd times yet wasn't convicted, indicted or prosecuted even ONCE. In the end he got so Fed up of being falsely accused of things he made a stand and said no more and that ended up with him losing his life. Still you will get people saying you must not resist arrest yadada, but if the police are corrupt you are left in a very difficult position.

Needs to be a major change.
Make the position of being a cop a higher paying gig so respectable, educated ppl will apply.
Make cadets go thru an unreasonable amount of testing. IQ and psych. If there is any question or doubt, they are disqualified.

This is a big problem in the US and is only gonna get worse. The cops today are not "fine" and its not all because of the natives here, they shoot/beat whites as well. The truth about cops is they don't HELP....they come AFTER the crime has been committed and take down the report. They don't PREVENT anything

Fuck the police. Sure, there are some decent ones, but fuck anyone who decides to make a "career"(lol, enjoy your 33k a year, ya low rent, skill less bums with IQs under 104) out of ruining other people's day. In my 28 years, the police have NEVER done anything for me except fuck with me. The only thing they have done is kept me from shooting thieves for fear of being locked in a cage for protecting my own property police. Your time is coming, coppers... Fuck the whole lot of you....

Where I live the cops are our neighbors and friends.

They respect us and our rights.

But I am sure the city cops are a different story.

In my half century of life I have seen a huge change from officer friendly to Bagdad bad-ass and its disheartning. If you LEO types reading this ever stop to wonder why you are feeling the hate, just look at how you treat the citizenry. When you look at me as your quota and not a person who made a mistake, or a way to your next bonus by citing me a $300 traffic ticket, we no longer look at you with respect. We see you as the enemy and to be feared. Ask your K 9 trooper which dog is likely to bite, the respected dog or fearful dog. Its just a matter of time before you will not be safe on the streets. The era of the lone wolf is near.

The problem with pigs is that even the supposed good ones will stand by and watch as a crazed pig goes gangster on some 70 pound, 80 year old lady. And then he'll lie through his teeth to protect his fellow fucking pig. And that's why there are no "good pigs." Fuck em' all.

I agree but there does need to be accountability. I'm not saying all the shootings are bad guys getting what they deserve. I've seen a multitude of videos where they were plain out wrong. It wasn't a black or white thing. They should pay the price for their injustice. If not, the people will make their lives a living hell. Even if it's the twisted and misguided.

First, I want to say that the great number of YouTube videos I've watched wherein police do not respect the rights and intrinsic value of human beings greatly angers and deeply sickens me. -However, there are many city and town departments whose officers do not act cruelly or have those inhumane attitudes.

For example, over the past 30 years I've had at least 20 encounters with police in Malden, MA, and though there are a few who seem to want to do as little as possible to get through their shift, by far most of them, having families of their own, act with great sensitivity and compassion toward the people they encounter on their calls. They genuinely seem to care, and genuinely wish to serve and protect their community.

Nowadays, officers are trained to be more aggressive, and place more importance on protecting themselves and their partners than before, and to evaluate situations above interpersonal dynamics. But I think it's not so much their training as the their department's attitude that determines whether officers care for their community or take a hard inhumane stance.

Re: Regardless of Ferguson, NY or Cleveland....how do we really feel about the police?
As others have said, there are good and there are bad. In my personal experience I have never come across an officer that I would put in that bad category. I believe that the vast majority of police are good people who truly want nothing more than to protect and serve. Yes, there are those few who let the power they are allotted go to their heads and do things that need to be reprimanded and if applicable prosecuted.

I wish some of these people, particularly those protesting for Ferguson would take a moment and consider truthfully just how they would have reacted had they been the officer. If people could let go of their anger long enough for just one moment of honest consideration they might see things a bit differently.

When you are a cop you are responsible for so many things but of the highest priority is going home to your family after each shift. I can't help to think that just about everyone in the country has a similar goal, the only difference is that for the officer that goal is in jeopardy every day.

In closing I want to say that I am thankful for the police in my town. They are good people who truly care about the community they are charged with protecting. They make it a point to interact with said community and develop an open, trusting and respectful relationship with it's residents.
Proud to share the basket with you.

Yup, it's not really what good or bad pigs do, it's that they are never made to pay for their crimes like everyone else does. That's what people really hate. The pigs better get on that job before we decide to do it for them.
