Quoting: Requiem it is not "I could care less" It is "I couldn't care less" With this statement it is your intention to say that you don't care. That you care very little. That you give no fucks. The statement that "I could care less", technically means that "I could be caring less than I am i.e. I am caring more than the minimum amount of caring that exists. Because I COULD be caring less." The statement is supposed to be that you COULDN'T care less, i.e. that there is no amount of caring that is less that the amount you care. Because you care the least amount possible. That is how we say it in Australia. In the UK. Because words mean what they mean, when you string them into sentences. I could care less about this thread... but its an important grammar lesson that will in no shape or form be heeded by anyone... ever. But this isn't one of my all time concerns... so i only slightly care. barely really. just a smidgen of care. The bare minimal. I didn't write it so people would heed it. I wrote it to illustrate how Americans don't know what they are talking about. Literally. Maybe they could care less but dont feel the need to. You seem a bit uptight. |

The problem is because of the internet, this stupidity is coming back across the waters and some English people are now starting to say it, this shit has a habit of proliferating in useage. I keep hearing English people in cafes and restaurants and on tv now using Americanisms such as 'Can I get me a such and such', where as once upon a time, us English people would have only ever said 'Could/May I have a such and such'. For all those that think OP is just a grammar Nazi - grammar can be really important, you can end up saying the opposite of what you actually mean if you're not careful, and one day it might get you in a heap of bother. |
