Google says its Titan drones will make their first flight in a few months
3/2/15

At Mobile World Congress this morning, Google's Sundar Pichai said that Titan, the drone company Google acquired in April of 2014, would be conducting its first test flight later this year. Google bought the company after it was widely reported Facebook had made an offer. Both were interested in the drone's ability to stay aloft for long periods of time with little energy and to carry a payload capable of providing internet connectivity to people down below.

What’s Wrong with the FAA’s New Drone Rules
3/2/15

Self-interest also plays a big part in the stonewalling, as bureaucrats feel threatened by technologies that allow consumers to rate and otherwise discipline companies, suggesting better and cheaper alternatives to corruptible human regulators. All too often, as well, regulated incumbents and other stakeholders are encouraging the delays and obstacles rather than retooling themselves to compete with technology-driven disruptors.

Entrepreneurs can’t wait for governments to catch up to the 21st century. Indeed, some countries are making inroads, not by inventing better technology, but by innovating their regulatory systems. Both the U.K. and Canada, for example, have already established rules for some commercial drone activities, giving their start-ups the opportunity to develop new applications and businesses while U.S. entrepreneurs twiddle their thumbs.

Operation and Certification of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems; Proposed
Rule

2/23/15

SUMMARY: The FAA is proposing to amend its regulations to adopt specific rules to allow the operation of small unmanned aircraft systems in the National Airspace System. These changes would address the operation of unmanned aircraft systems, certification of their operators, registration, and display of registration markings. The proposed rule would also find that airworthiness certification is not required for small unmanned aircraft system operations that would be subject to this proposed rule.
Lastly, the proposed rule would prohibit model aircraft from endangering the safety of the National Airspace System.

DATES: Send comments on or before April 24, 2015.

ACLU sues White House for drone strikes info
3/17/15

While estimates indicate that the drone strikes, launched by the CIA and the military’s Joint Special Operations Command, have declined since Obama’s speech, a November report by the human rights group Reprieve found that Obama’s drone strikes had killed 1,147 people in pursuit of only 41 men, prompting questions about the rigor of the process employed by the administration to launch attacks, according to the report.

Wearable Drones Buzz the Horizon
3/10/15

Pruden and his colleagues tried to envision what drones might look like in the future when wearable drones become more commonplace. First, they had to determine where drones could live on the body when they're not in use.

"We have to find a place to put them when we're not using them," Pruden said.

CIA official who directed hunt for bin Laden is being removed from post
3/25/15

The head of the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center, who presided over the agency’s drone campaign and directed the hunt for Osama bin Laden, is being removed from his post, officials said, a watershed moment as the CIA turns its focus to a new generation of extremist threats.

The move, part of a major reorganization under CIA Director John Brennan, ends a nine-year tenure during which the center was transformed into a paramilitary force that employed armed drones to kill thousands of suspected terrorists and militants but also killed an unknown number of civilians.

OnePlus tiny April Fools' drone is real and for sale
3/31/15

You might be thinking that the DR-1 is an April Fools' day prank, and, well, it's supposed to be -- but OnePlus has ruined its own joke by actually selling a limited quantity of the tiny quadcopters. And if you act fast, you can nab one on the company's website and have it shipped to a US address.
