Captive orangutan has human right to freedom, Argentine court rules
These people are nuts. Zoo animals are on permanent vacation with full-time butlers and maids and doctors and free from any predators who would eat them.

BUENOS AIRES - An orangutan held in an Argentine zoo can be freed and transferred to a sanctuary after a court recognized the ape as a "non-human person" unlawfully deprived of its freedom, local media reported on Sunday.

Animal rights campaigners filed a habeas corpus petition - a document more typically used to challenge the legality of a person's detention or imprisonment - in November on behalf of Sandra, a 29-year-old Sumatran orangutan at the Buenos Aires zoo.

In a landmark ruling that could pave the way for more lawsuits, the Association of Officials and Lawyers for Animal Rights (AFADA) argued the ape had sufficient cognitive functions and should not be treated as an object.

The court agreed Sandra, born into captivity in Germany before being transferred to Argentina two decades ago, deserved the basic rights of a "non-human person."

"This opens the way not only for other Great Apes, but also for other sentient beings which are unfairly and arbitrarily deprived of their liberty in zoos, circuses, water parks and scientific laboratories," the daily La Nacion newspaper quoted AFADA lawyer Paul Buompadre as saying.

I see this as a good thing. Zoos and circuses are just wrong.

Circuses are hard to justify since they use animals only for human entertainment with the welfare of the animals being compromised in the process.

When it comes to zoos and aquariums, critics see them as animal prisons or even exploiters and traffickers of wildlife. However, supporters of zoos and aquariums counter with the perspective that the animals serve as ambassadors, helping to promote awareness of programs for reintroduction, endangered species recovery, habitat restoration, scientific research, technological development, support of protected areas, conservation education, fundraising, and coalition building. Supporters argue a utilitarian point that the ecological and species benefits from animal exhibition outweigh the individual costs of those in captivity.

It's about time. Zoos are nothing less than prisons. I used to love them when I was a kid. Then I grew up and realized the animals were mostly miserable and all enslaved.

I still remember the first time I went to a zoo. It was the Philadelphia zoo and I was about 7. I was horrified! The poor lions pacing in a cold, small, tiled cage. I went home in tears.

You can't make a wrong right, no matter how many posative arguements can be thought up.

It's merely a silly name. Don't over-think it. Sorry to break it to you, but I'm a heterosexual man attracted to babes with enormous juggs. You'll have to keep on cruisin', sailor.

Is this the same sentiment you have for humans in prisons?

That they are living a better life with their keepers and cages than they would be if they were free?

And poor guy didn't even do anything wrong.

It just happened to be something that ignorant yokels wanted to ogle.

Hopefully we will be seeing more and more of this as people recognize the inherent consciousness in all living things.

We have to learn to coexist with other creatures, not use them for our amusement and advancement.

Killing something to eat or to protect ourselves is one thing, keeping it imprisoned to be stared at is another.

Being awake and aware and fully conscious has less to do with being self aware than it does with recognizing that other beings are ALSO self aware.

Empathy goes a long way.

Everyone is waiting for 'first contact' and we can't even communicate with or treat humanely all the other sentient beings on our own planet.

Good point. Banning zoos for animal cruelty is one thing, but giving animals the legal status of persons is another thing entirely.

It should be a moral issue and not a legal one.

So if i caged you inside a zoo, provided you with medical care, food and kept you safe from any criminals, you would choose that life over living outside?

Consider you were an Orangutan, would you choose a life inside a cage with maybe some confined space outside over hundreds of square miles of jungle you can climb and move around freely, just because the zoo is safer?

If you were an eagle, would you prefer being inside a cage in a zoo just because you get medicare and free food, rather than being able to fly around in open skies and do all kind of maneuvers.

If you were a dolphin, would you prefer to be confined inside a limited pool, just because you get free food and medical care, rather than being able to swim around in thousand of miles of sea with millions of things to explore?

Only a self-righteous human would think of animals in a zoo living a luxurious life full of joy.
