What do you think about the prospects for indefinite lifespans? Immortality. | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 66137450 Australia 12/22/2014 08:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | After doing my own research on immortality I have found biomedical gerontology to be the most promising area of study out of all the others of extending human life spans within our own life times, specifically Dr. Aubrey de Grey and the research being done at his SENS Foundation in California. Quoting: IDontWantToDie 35756164 I support the cause of immortality because not dying is my life goal, I love life and would never get bored. There is simply too much to do, to learn, to experience for me to ever get bored with life. Thats why I find it absurd when people say they would get bored if they lived forever, how can you possibly get bored? Apparently, you've never seen Highlander. Immortality isn't an easy gig, you are required to have duels with other immortals from time to time and you can't cheat (use a gun), you have to use swords (oldschool). If you get your head chopped off, you're done, for good. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 35756164 United States 12/22/2014 08:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Whether we'll see indefinite lifespans in our lifetimes depends entirely on funding. I mean, just to compare two projects: 1. The Manhattan Project Cost: $26 billion Employees: 130,000 Sites: Over 30 2. Labs actually working on telomerase induction: Ron DePinho at MD Anderson Cancer Center/ Harvard Medical School Maria Blasco at the CNIO Bill Andrews at Sierra Sciences I don't know how many employees work with Drs. DePinho and Blasco, but Dr. Andrews has about ten employees. If telomerase induction is the first step towards clinical immortality - and I believe it is - we are devoting pennies to it. Just pocket change. Probably less than the annual budget for Duke's basketball team. |

I too would like the chance to live forever (or as long as possible). If you had an indefinite lifespan you would never get bored. Just think about the technological advance you would witness. Eventually, humans will develop better means to escape the Earth. Just think, you could easily do a hundred year space voyage if you had eternity ahead of you. Who wouldn't relish the prospect of exploring the stars? |

Yes I believe that we will start improving lifespan through stem cell and gene therapies within the next 5 years. Regenerative medicine is the future and within the next 10 to 15 years I would expect that we would find the techniques to extend lives indefinitely through body systems repair and disease reversal. |

Most likely via digital technologies such as a digital backup of your mind, or transferring your consciousness completely away from the biological and into the digital realm. We will have also mastered the human body, being able to clone and grow an entire body complete with all organs for replacement as the current one gets injured or ages. We will have also mastered all diseases. Life is a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves. |

Ensuring continuity of mind through biological immortality would be necessary to enable you to live long enough for the development of more robust technologies such as mind backup, AI, machine bodies etc. |

We are built as perfect machines. We are designed to live forever. Living forever is a reality, but you are going to need 2 things: 1 - a pretty healthy body, so start being healthy and doing everything you can to improve your chances 2 - a buttload of money, so start making money and figuring out how to become a billionaire. It will be the very healthy private billionaires who are the first to live forever, guaranteed. |

Archmond User ID: 24059095 Brazil 12/22/2014 09:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's foolishness. Life happens in all planes of existance and this plane is the "less fun" of them all. Anyway, in a purely materialistic point of view, it depends on how are you going to live this "endless" life. You want to stay immortal at the peak of your 30's vitality or as a 16 year old tetraplegic? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 44689360 United States 12/22/2014 11:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So when you say live forever you really mean work forever. I don't see how that is a good thing. If we were all to live forever while continuing to reproduce at the same time technology moves forward reducing the number of workers needed we will end up with generations of unemployed. This then leads to a drain on the economy through welfare/aid which then forces those working to hand over more and more of their earnings causing them to live an impoverished life style. I will pass on your world of living forever. We must all die to make room for our children to make lives for themselves and hopefully learning from our mistakes and making the world a better place. Living forever is a scam to enslave the population while the rich elite do become gods. |

Let's say a kidnapper abducts a child, and decides to torture her in an underground cellar. If there's no death, the kidnapper could potentially abuse and torture the person for thousands of years. |
