Re: Ultimate survival tools thread
Absolutely! I've got three.

I recommend at least two good knives. One smaller and with a point for fine work and a larger one for heavy work.

Have a sharpening stone with you and know how to use it.

With fire and a knife. just about everything else, can be made.

Get a prtable water filter too.

Re: Ultimate survival tools thread
And if you haven't checked out The Kolbrin book, i couldn't recomend it highly enough. It is by far the most spiritualy nurishing bible style book i've ever had the fortune to come across. Bible style in that it is a compilation of cultural histories handed down through ages. Found stamped in bronze under Glastonbury abbey when it burned down. Alegedly brought there by Joseph of aramethia. Also contains eyewitness acounts of what was happening in the skys of egypt during the plagues/exodus of the jews. And many other inspirational stories. Again, highly highly highly recomended!

absolutely. i concur with your overview. i'd also add a couple hundred feet of authentic paracord (with core & nylon sheath)... makes for making lashings or netting / webbing, snares etc. a lot less labor intensive than preparing reeds/grasses or animal gut.

re: knives, i would suggest a folder for everyday carry anyways but re: the main sheath knife, definitely full tang and with thick and broad enough point to dig and hack at things with.

STAY AWAY from those goddamned 'rambo survival knives' with the damned 'compass' and 'survival gear' in the empty handle! does it make sense to have an empty handle on a knife when you may need to actually stab or hammer something with it?

msr makes excellent portable filters for backpacking but its great with the ceramic filter. scrub after a few uses... or a few hundred, and you're good to drink clean water from ANYWHERE.

but of course use your discretion.

bit of petroleum jelly (vaseline) rubbed into authentic cotton balls makes for excellent and highly portable no-fail fuel for tinder. just carry about 20 in a 35mm canister.

a link i just stumbled on..

basic rule of thumb: there should be nothing gimmicky about your survival supplies. go tried and true.
