Quoting: Anonymous Coward 66337096 I remember before pocket calculators and fax machines. You children amuse me with your 'memories', and your revulsion at pubes. You are never going to grow up, THANKS to the internet. You were born before the 1900s? You must be the oldest person in the world! Phones have been around for quite a while. ;P |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 2389949 United States 12/24/2014 12:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I remember when Ebay item descriptions did not include pics. The seller would write "Email for pic". I remember getting 50-100 requests for pics, per item! lol Sellers had to take a regular photo, scan that pic, then SLOWLY email it around. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 63826178 I also remember spending $1000 for one of those new, fancy digital cameras. Yes, good times. No doubt! And when the owner of Ebay sent emails out offering stock to ebayers early on. I bought some to help him grow, and lost all information of it thinking nothing would come of it. Haha! Boy was I wrong! |

What was great about early AOL was you could have them deliver 50 of the free trial disks to your door with fresh temp usernames / passwords. And then with a CC generator, generate unlimited CC#'s that may not have been real, but followed the correct pattern. Back then, the system would initially only check to see if the number was a valid pattern, and they would validate the actual card after 30 days. So at 29 days, start a new account and tell all your friends your new username. Worked for awhile. Then there were also tricks to make the system think you were in a 'free area' the whole time you were logged in. Remember, AOL's monthly plan was 4 hours free and then you pay per hour after. I would also try this on CompuServ, eWorld, etc. But AOL had the best community for Warez. My first computer was a Apple Performa 475, which had a 25mhz LC040 chip...no FPU. A nice processor for the time, great for Kings Quest 6 / Monkey Island II. It shipped with a 2400 baud modem, so you're looking at 1MB / hr. I later had 14.4, 33.6, and then 56.k. The 56K was quick enough to run a Hotline server for ROMs. What really sucked me into computers then, was HyperCard. I would make games, fake OS's, and 'zines all night long. Thank you Bill Atkinson! And we all know the dark site of the web was Usenet...made no look like church. Last Edited by ok1ha on 12/24/2014 10:57 PM |

Did anybody ever use one of those acoustic couplers that you put the phone receiver in? I was thinking today while trying to get Christmas carols on AOL radio about that silly "You've got mail!" It was much more appealing than those awful dissonant noises that Windows has for system sounds. Did anybody else ever use Genie, and take part in Jerry Pournelle's board? There was some good stuff there ************************************************************************ Corruptisima re publica plurimae leges. ~ Terence |
Lil Sis User ID: 11213558 United States 12/24/2014 10:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I met my husband on AOL in 1999..in a chatroom! Every night, when it was time for us to meet and message, we both lived in fear that those flashing lightening rods on AOL wouldn't connect. As for sending our first pics of each other, it was a big deal and very time consuming. But, I kind of miss those days when things were slower and the internet was less crowded. I certainly am grateful to AOL's chatroom for bringing us together. Of course, my family and friends thought I had gone crazy...meeting a man on the internet!!! Oh, how insane! Well, we're still together and internet romance doesn't seem so weird anymore.
