Rev. 14:11 says the smoke will ascend, not the torture will persist. And the world usually translated as eternal in English Bibles is "ainios" meaning "age", an unspecified period of time. The Bible clearly states God will repay each person accordingly. Most mainstream Christians don't want to hear any of that though, since nothing gets their juices flowing like a quality dose of hellporn and the prospect of eternal suffering (for others of course, not themselves).

I could definitely understand some form of punishment for an evil life but something reasonable based on the sins. Even the most heinous people don't deserve ETERNITY in hell, no one does.

This is generally a moot point considering that most Christians believe that it's not based on sin, but converting and accepting Jesus as your personal savior that keeps your feet out of the flames. This is even worse. Some mass murderer/rapist can just convert and get into heaven. While someone that was born, raised and then died in some isolated place where they've never heard of Jesus goes to hell.

So "hell is for evil". How much evil, 98%, 2%? Nobody is entirely evil and again, no evil is worth an eternity of punishment.

So I should discount the New Testament, all modern bibles and learn the languages needed to understand the original scriptures? Apparently God really makes us jump through hoops to understand his message. This also doesn't make sense.

Don't even pretend you have that authority. What happened to compassion, mercy and snatching people from the fire?

I do not believe that one is in hell eternally, hell is a state of mind which one can grow out of. One will look after death at their review of life and judge themselves. They will go where they feel is most comfortable for them. Do you really think that criminals would feel comfortable in lightworld? They would choose an area where they can still live out their desires, hunger for power and all other kind of drama till they get sick of it and decide to move up. Hell is only a prison in the mind.

We are "children of God" right? We only have our limited human understanding to conceive the world around us. What child hasn't told their parents they hate them at some point? Do parents dump their kid at an orphanage because of it? No, because they understand the limited understanding and fickleness of children. How unreasonable is it to ask an omnipotent and omniscient God to do the same with us?
