They are touting how successful the internet downloads are.

No more loud people in theaters.
No more driving to theaters.
Another way to make it easier for us not to gather in person till we forget how to communicate

It would stop piracy from theaters that is cutting into profits by making sure everyone in the world with broadband can have access to the movie in a split second, reducing piracy losses

Huh? You got it backwards. This will cause more piracy. People will buy the new movie stream rental then find a way to mass produce dvd or blu-ray formats. Then sell in supermarket parking lots. We will be like China, with a lot of fuckers selling knockoff.

Why would people buy a hardcopy of it when they can simply download it to a dvr for the same price?

also the day they released this movie online it was availble for illegal download in like 5 differnt versions. and its also on youtube on their own page. this movie is ment to be watched. and just because of that im not watching it :D

Nah, case humans want to be the FIRST.
If they can see it THAT day, they can talk about it in work or school.
They will be able to be included in the conversations about the movie.

No one wil wait for the pirated copy.

Absolutley.

100%

Its partly due to demand, and partly due to piracy.

What they will now do in the not to distant future - is release movies ONLINIE and IN THE THEATER at the same time.

You can watch at home OR go to the theatre. Your choice.

I don't think this will kill the cinema.

But it will mean that they will get money from the people who otherwise would not go to the theater and wait until in appears on pirate bay.

This is also why torrent sites are being hit hard.

Basically EVERY movie will go straight to 'video' or in this case 'straight to download'.

But will also be straight to cinema too, for people who want a big screen night out experience.

Re: Was SONY testing a direct-to-internet market share? No more movie theaters?
We can only hope that they will start doing this and stop with the movie theaters. I will NOT go to a theater at all. Who in their right mind would want to go? You have to pay $50 for tickets, then pay $20 for a small coke and a small popcorn and then you can NOT watch the movie for blacks screaming and talking over the movie and on top of that you have people blinding you with their cell phones and texting on them...oh, and don't forget about the people behind you kicking your chair. I stopped going to theaters a year ago. I only stream and watch from the internet now so this would be the best thing they could do.

Soon with the new sopa bill signed. It will make cable companies liable for illegal downloading. By doing that, they will have no problem giving list of people doing the uploading and downloading. No more warning letters lol. You will a new guest in a privatized prison. Sony is just trying to see how many people are honest and the freeloaders.. Believe me, they have your names, so beware. Peer guardian or others were bought out by the studios awhile back. So it's either watch in theater or digital release rental for 48 hrs.

why would you think piracy is not part of the marketing?
piracy has worked for over a decade now. all the companys are still there. box office is still being broken time after time.

they used to pay money to trial watch tvshows and movies etc.
they have us to do that for them now.

Download a movie for free and potential virus and dealing with the BULLSHIT. FREE

Paying $10 for a movie on your TV with cheaper snacks.... $10.

You can BET many people will opt to pay rather than deal with a potential virus
