D-Wave Two boasts a 512-qubit CPU, a vast improvement on the D-Wave One, which has a 128-qubit CPU.[6] If each qubit were in direct communication with every other qubit, then a 512-qubit machine would be over 100 orders of magnitude harder to simulate than a 128-qubit machine[7] but, because each qubit in the D-Wave architecture communicates directly with only six other qubits, D-Wave estimates that the D-Wave Two is about 300,000 times more powerful than the D-Wave One.

DW2 is only about 300,000 times more powerful than the D-Wave One. So, you know, just a modest spec bump.

Heck, even when the DW2 is only using 439 qubits, as it did when D-Wave Systems consultant, Catherine McGeoch, tested it against state of the art workstations running top of the line CPLEX optimization algorithms, the DW2 produced results 3,600 times faster—providing 100 solutions in a half second. The workstations required a half hour to produce the same.



But in order to take full advantage quantum effects, the DW2 requires very specific, extreme conditions. For one, it operates at 0.02 Kelvin—150 times colder than the depths of interstellar space and just two degrees above absolute zero—in a vacuum 10 billion times lower than standard atmospheric pressure and experiences 50,000 times less magnetic interference thanks to its heavy shielding. Surprisingly, achieving these temperatures consumes just 15.5kW and takes up just ten square meters of floor space, compared to the thousands of kilowatts and warehouses of space that traditional super computers require.

the software "knows", not the hardware
and the software only mirrors what the programmer knows (or he think he knows..)
So how the frack could a programmer know if we are alone in the universe or if the quantum entanglement nothing but another pile of academic bs ?

in reality, this super hardware will be used to crack codes ( in real time.. like peeking into VPN tunnels or listening to continuously xored voice chat like the original/initial/v1 Skype used to do.. and so on..)

TrueNorth chip incorporates 5.4 billion transistors, It also features 1 million programmable neurons and 256 million programmable synapses. That's far lower than the 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion to 150 trillion synapses in the human brain -- but still enough, Modha said, to run devices that could, for example, proactively issue tsunami alerts, do oil-spill monitoring, or enforce shipping lane rules. And all that happens while consuming just 70 milliwatts of power, about the same as a hearing aid.

For example, if a robot run with today's microprocessors was walking toward a pillar, it would depend on image processing and huge computing resources and power to avoid a collision. By comparison, a robot using a synaptic chip would steer clear of the danger by sensing the pillar, much as a person would.

A new AI software program developed by researchers at Google and Stanford University can recognise objects in photos and videos at near-human levels of understanding.

While each team used a slightly different approach, they both combined deep convolutional neural networks with recurrent neural networks that excel at text analysis and natural language processing. The programs were able to "learn" from each new interaction

Computers are great, but the problems they solve are usually petty it seems. You can't go over your human mindset with powerful computers.

These are not simplistic computers of the past, they think like WE DO.

They grow in computing power exponentially, roughly doubling each year.

Because humans can't possibly have invented any of this stuff. It has to be alien tech.

If 'they' think like 'we' (humans) do, then we're in for a world of hurt shortly - seeing as how 'we' (as a species) seem to be quite irrational and neurotic much of the time, with a fairly significant subset that is full blown psychotic or schizo....

How can anyone think we, as humans, developed any of this, when there are scientists who actually still believe that we evolved from apes or subscribe in Darwinism?
