With a terrible owner, any dog can become hostile...
I would suggest that there is a correlation between nasty pit bulls and their owners being stupid ugly red necks or some other Ameritrash.

I have met pit bulls that were sweeter than malteses before...

Yeah, its their owners.....
5 pits killed a 52 year old on the beach in Ecuador last week. The locals burned the dogs to death. The day before, my nephew went to pet a very young pit and it grabbed his shorts, and would not let go, just growling and shaking its head, finally after about a minute, the owner came and smacked the dog and it let go. Vicious, worthless dogs.........

Wrong... A mouthing puppy will chew on anything, but they aren't viscious. Who ever owned 5 of them and let them run together was getting into more than they could handle. They require lots of training and time, just like other dogs. I have a German Shepherd. I have seen a lot of mean ones, but if you take time with them, they turn out like a member of the family...

They are so cute when they are puppies. My cousin once brought a cute little pup on his way home and when he told me that it was pitbull I could not believe him :).

And one other thing I thought of to mention....
Dogs are very awesome percievers of fear. A large muscular dog that everyone has been conditioned to fear will obviously have more incidents of detecting fear and acting on it.
My GSD, which is young, will try to pounce on other dogs, kids, and people who are afraid of him.
Personally, I don't think they can tell a difference between pharamones and vibes that are released from fear and those that are released out of anger or defense...

But the statistics say it is Geman Shepards who are the bad biters?

Hmmmm...

scratching

I think it is probably a little of breed and a little of treatment, wouldn't you say?

I have seen these dogs though, and they look very strong, maybe a little too strong for one with children.

Re: WHAT would make people want to own PITBULLS??
People need to STOP buying into the media and assuming that it was a pitbull that mauled, killed, or bit an individual. People who take the sterotypes of pitbulls and incorporate these biases into their lives are simply ignorant or uneducated about the breed. Know the facts before speculating the attack was made by a pitbull. Educate yourself before you make these assumptions. Majority of the assumptions that a "Pitbull bit a person or a pitbull mauled, or killed someone" is in fact (through an immense amount of research) not a pitbull. I understand that since the breed has established a bad reputation via irresponsible owners, it is easy to point the finger and say the short black haired, muscular dog is a pitbull. When in fact it may be a bull terrier, presa canario, labrador, staffordshire, canary dog, argentina, etc. However, I am no way advocating that a pitbull never bites or attacks innocent people. Because it does happen. Without the appropriate attention, training, and unconditional love to ANY dog breed, THEY WILL BITE. And it may sound redundant, but it is in fact irresponsible owners and thugs who reinforce the negativity of this beautiful breed. Pitbulls are not for everyone and should require an intense background check. Ownership and breeding should also require certification to own and reproduce. Many people own pitbulls for all the wrong reasons. One specific example of this is: "Being the cool person with the intimidating muscular dog." FAIL! Then you have individuals who love the strong-willed, high energetic, great security, exceptionally well with people, overwhelmingly affectionate and game companionship. Educate yourself before you become another stereotype.

Re: WHAT would make people want to own PITBULLS??
I just don't get it.
Pitbulls are screwed up. Most attacks on kids are by pitbulls. Those are not regular dogs...

Me and my husband were putting garage sales signs the other day. There was a overweight middle age woman walking a pitbull. He was really walking her.
Pitbull saw my husband with a sign and a hammer and started growling at him.
That woman tried to come the dog down, but he didn't seem to care what she had to say....She finally pulled him by the leash and walked away. He kept looking back. She had no clue what she was doing. We have a whole neighbourhood full of kids here, and I've seen 3 people in the vicinity with pitbulls. I also saw one pitbull running around loose several months ago.
I wish they had some kind of a law against that breed.

I have one and she's far from aggressive towards anything that's not in her food bowl. I also have a mix and she's never been anything but sweet. And you are wrong on the breed that is the most aggressive.
That honor goes to Chihuahua and sausage dogs.

Also whatever stat you're looking at for serious bites is a combination of Pits, Rottweilers, presa canarios. It's not just one specific breed. It also depends on how you raise them. Keeping them "intact" is a mistake... most agression comes from sex (pursuit of or marking ones territory).Ours are treated like the family, they are raised in a structured, loving manner, they are all fixed. The jack asses down the street trying to get his dog to bite other dogs... they are the problem. It's not the breed, it's the owner.

Re: WHAT would make people want to own PITBULLS??
They're amazing dogs. That's all I had growing up. Some of which, were rescued from fighting rings. They are loyal and protective. Never turned on anyone in the family. But, you have to know the dog. The dogs aren't the problem, it's irresponsible owners that are. They, like many breeds are not a dog that should ever run loose. If you can't control the dog, then you shouldn't have it. What people don't understand is that even though dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, they are still animals and have instincts. If you walk into someone's yard with a pit and that dog attacks it's because you are in their territory. And, I happen to agree with the dog, if I don't know you, you shouldn't be in my yard, but seeing as how people don't have respect for other's property these days things happen. Now in defense of the dog, the dog doesn't realize their territory ends at the side walk, so there for I would say the owner isn't doing a very good job of keeping their dog contained if something were to happen.

Also, the jaw strength of a pit is amazing, so if they bite the damage is a lot worse than say a golden retriever. All you have to do is look at their head to see this.

There are plenty of breeds that are just as, if not more aggressive than a Pit. What about Presa Canarios, Chow Chow's, Rottweilers, etc, I could go on and on with that list. My Chihuahua that I have now is more aggressive than any Pit Bull I ever had.

As far as kids being bit, kids naturally love dogs, unless they have had a bad experience with one. children should always be taught to NEVER pet a dog without first asking the owner if it's ok. ANY dog will bite. If someone asks, "does your dog bite," I always say she never has before. The point is, they are animals, and no matter how well trained they are, they're are always exceptions to the rule.

Re: WHAT would make people want to own PITBULLS??
i have a giant breed, english mastiff and live downtown in the city. we are out three times a day, everyday, and encounter hundreds of breeds at the parks and beaches... and only once have i had a problem with pitts. (most of the time they run because poe will eat them). haha actually it's little poodles and chihuahua's (alphas) that set off my boy. but perhaps the most telling part about society with a giant breed? nine times out of ten, it's the towering muscular man who crosses the street in fear of my dog... yet little old ladies walk right up and hug him around the neck.

Truth is, Pits are a POTENTIALLY dangerous breed, in the same way that the .45 automatic is a POTENTIALLY dangerous weapon. Any asshole can own one and use it irresponsibly; the difference is, a gun cannot leap the fence and chew the face off of the neighbor's baby without help.
