Always look at the other end of the leash...that way you can easily assume the behavior of the dog.

Here are some examples and these are taken directly from the quotes on this thread...

A) "I tell you what, you stay away from my dogs and off my property and you have no worries. They're well trained to rip your throat out."

B)"i own a pitbul and he is the most docile animal i have ever known. he wouldn't harm a fly."

And then when it came to the responses regarding children...

A)"I'd be wiling to bet that these kids that are getting mauled by pit bulls are evil little bastards and the dog knows it."

B)"My parents owned a pit bull, sweetest most loving dog in the world, loved kids."

When pitbull owners feel like they have the upper hand and want throw their weight wround A) seems to be among the favored responses.

When the rest of the people have had enough and start calling for the banning and euthanizing of pits then it's time to switch to plan B)

I just don't get it.
Pitbulls are screwed up. Most attacks on kids are by pitbulls. Those are not regular dogs...

Me and my husband were putting garage sales signs the other day. There was a overweight middle age woman walking a pitbull. He was really walking her.
Pitbull saw my husband with a sign and a hammer and started growling at him.
That woman tried to come the dog down, but he didn't seem to care what she had to say....She finally pulled him by the leash and walked away. He kept looking back. She had no clue what she was doing. We have a whole neighbourhood full of kids here, and I've seen 3 people in the vicinity with pitbulls. I also saw one pitbull running around loose several months ago.
I wish they had some kind of a law against that breed.

That is NOT true.

Pitbulls have instinctive fighting tendencies, they will attack if you don't train them NOT to.

There are so many dog breeds, why do people need THAT ONE so badly? The only one that is dangerous!

Re: WHAT would make people want to own PITBULLS??
I remember a Male pit from when i was a little kid.
The dog was so strong he'd knock me over and start licking the shit of me which i found hillarious and may me laugh. If on my stomach the dog would get his nose under me and flip me over to lick my face more.

Very nice dog, never feared him in the slightest and was amazed at how strong he was!

I know however that some have been mistreated and/or trained badly but generally their just great dogs.

This is the biggest load of shit ever, if you have a brain and actually do some detective work, you will find that most of the fatal attacks were on the owner(s), in alot of cases the dog lived indoors and was raised from a pup. And most striking of all the animal had no prior history of aggression. This does not mean the animal is bad, it means they have instincts that no training will ever diminish.

Hey OP, I didn't have time to read through all the replies in this thread but I wanted to make a statement.

A Pit Bull's true nature is to love. Their connection with their master is essential to how this nature matures. A master can easilly take the loving nature and twist it into fear and madness. Similarly a master who nurtures the loving nature of the animal and provides a secure envionment will have an awsome dog by any account. Most children are a reflection of their parents and their parents lives. Because of the pit bull's true nature which is to love, the pit bull is very much a reflection of its master. People who raise pit bulls right and who are also right with themselves should have happy healthy loving and still very protective animal. This to me is as healthy a relationship between human and dog as can be desired.

No question, Not possibly a dog for everyone. It's a very strong and hearty breed. But they are good dogs with the right owners. In the city i live in {Austin}. I come across them often.I'm the sort of person who will talk to a dog owner while petting thier dog. Never had one problem with a pit.

If it werent pitbulls it would be some other scary looking dog that the people who want mean tough dogs would get and we would have topics about them, and eventually we would ban all pets but guinea pigs wtf...

some people dont have children of their own to worry about, and actually watch/maintain their animals.

theres nothing wrong with pitbulls. the only problem is when the wrong kind of person has one.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 91904

Nope. You don't know what you are talking about. I owned a dog business for several years. We allowed ONE pitbull to come in--only because it started coming in as a small pup. It's owner was a lovely, professional woman. And she loved that dog dearly. And one day, he just snapped. And it was ugly. And she paid a doctor's bill that was even uglier.

Re: WHAT would make people want to own PITBULLS??
I have a pit and he is the most affectionate and loving dog I've ever owned. I've been around dogs all my life, and had many different breeds. I can tell you for sure, my jack russel, and my min pin are more dangerous than my pit bull is. No one ever thinks to put these kinds of dogs in the dangerous category, because they're small. But the truth is, that if these little dogs were actually big dogs, there would be the same kind of stories floating around about how dangerous those breeds are.

Pit bulls are powerful and energetic dogs, not to mention one of the SMARTEST breeds there are. If a strong dog should decide that it is threatened by you in some way, and acts on it, it turns out to be a bad situation, merely because the dog is powerful and capable of damage. Not necessarily because the dog is viscous.

A pit bull could bite someone as a sort of "leave me alone" nip, and they would think it was going for the kill, just because it's powerful and intimidating looking. Whereas a "rat dog" could go after someone and be 100% viscous, while they just say "oh how cute he is when he's being ornery".

Don't bully my breed! If trained properly, and by properly I mean proper obedience training by experienced owners/trainers. The owner who just likes dogs and gets a pit bull is probably not fully capable of handling such an attention requiring breed. Don't forget they were originally bred as game dogs, not for fighting in dog rings!

Fun fact for the OP, and all who support the opinion, who are all misinformed and only showing their ignorance on the topic (like good media controlled sheeple) :

Of the 72 dogs given the title of "Super dog" by the UKC, 39 of them have been pit bulls, or "pit bull type" (Stafordshire, American PBT, American Bulldog, etc.)

Doesn't seem like that could be said of the "good for nothing but fighting or killing, viscous, unstable dog that is the pit bull"

Re: WHAT would make people want to own PITBULLS??
As a follow up, the scatterbred pits that are around everywhere are not doing the breed any good, usually. Dogs that are bred for appearance by backyard breeders, are usually line bred from specific lineages to achieve a desirable physical trait or color. Of course when you do this, you completely disregard the temperament among lineages, which can lead to dogs that are ill tempered, or predisposed to be excessively shy.

Why would excessively shy be bad? If a dog is not sociable, then any person who approaches it besides it's family, or in some rare cases a family member who startles or scares it, it will likely act out of self defense (which is the instinct everyone keeps throwing out there. The breed's natural instincts are not to bite people!)

My dog is powerful, and capable of defending himself should he be scared or threatened (as is the case with the majority of 'dog bites stranger' incidents...) How dare he be capable of defending himself! (right?!)
