Religion called for its highest 'authority' to remain sexually abstinent.

Priests for example. What comes of one who ignores the sexual impulse completely?

Well, religion be damned. I was arguing God said no such thing. Man did.

From a physiological standpoint nothing good. The energy will manifest. Period. Eventually. Likely after many warped and dark changes to its natural state.

See priests and little boys for examples. Going against our natural design and urges is sacrilege to me. There is very little than can not be done responsibly with willing participants.

It's practiced for multiple reasons but the one I think you are after is that we deny our nature and think it is dirty. And for those with no or poor impulse control I suppose it may be.

So we deny our nature and call it God to exalt it into a virtue. Because abstinence makes ppl feel dirty too. They'll just never admit it.

I'm more after why it became a 'thing' in that regard.

It was expected 'practice' and is practiced all over. From covering women in black sheets, to nuns, to monks, to priests.

Goes on and into other practices.


Maybe it just comes down to denying impulse for what is perceived to be greater than self, run rampant.

Or learning to control impulse, twisted.


Maybe not. Maybe there is real reason for doing so.

Well historically speaking many religious practices extolled the separation of man from the desires that were viewed as binding him to temptation. And in patriarchal society you can imagine the amount of temptation that the desire of the female body produced. I can imagine that overcoming one of our most primal yearnings could easily be perceived as a holy accomplishment. and again in a patriarchal society this also applies towards reducing the power that the female had over men

Seems pretty clear to me.

Denying/suppressing our nature = of god/holy = religion.

Instead of exploring and understanding the reasoning behind our nature = of god/holy = true enlightenment/peace.
