5 people buried in the ancient tomb of Amphipolis | |
Ostria1 (OP) User ID: 66965117 Greece 01/19/2015 12:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So now again, we have this big debate from archeologists and historians on the question: Could Alexander the Great be buried in Amphipolis? Could he be the "burned" person no 5? The ones pro, say that it is very probable. Their claim is based in some historical facts like: a) While Alexander died in 323 bc in Babylon he remained there embalmed in honey for 2 years and only moved towards Egypt in 321bc, Could it be that they waited for a tomb to be constructed for him back in Macedonia? b) Same in Egypt the tomb at Memphis was temporarily. And some decates after his body was brought to Alexandria. c) When Serapeum in Alexandria was distroyed by Christian mob or/and roman soldiers, probably Alexanders tomb was destroyed too (+_391ac) What they say is that probably followers of the old greek religion could have already taken the remains of Alexander to save them from total destruction. d) If the woman is Olympias, then the two men could be her grandsons. The ones against, say a) Alexander's tomb at Alexandria was destroyed by the mob. End of story. b) Olympias was younger when she died (57 years old) and not over 60 (oh well) c) Olympias was murdered in Pydna, probably buried there too, though we have no excavations at the toumpa there, we have found some inscriptions that lead that this was probably some of her descendant's tomb. If this is true, to me it is actually quite shocking VERY shocking indeed I really don't what to say, other than I'm into Greek history/mythology(Gods and Goddesses) and Alexander was essentially like a 'demi-god' or manifest deity if you will 5 stars |

Quoting: Seer777 Interesting read either way. Well, mummification is not a Greek way of burial. It was Babylonean (Persian) and Egyptian. Burning was a way of Greek burial. But i guess if you want to save some remains it is easier to move burned bones than a whole mummified body. Ostria |

This is why the Indiana Jones films were so popular! Though much of the ancient world has been already found during the last centuries (esp from 1800s-till today) i think there are still a lot of amazing things to be found. Ostria |

I believe so as well A lot of our ancient past is being rediscovered, I believe it is helping to bridge the divide between 'then' and 'now' Then, of course was very different and just as strange and mysterious as it is today. Helps to keep us interested in life and the cosmos I think |
