5 people buried in the ancient tomb of Amphipolis
Today the Greek Ministry of Culture has announced the long-awaited results of the analysis on the bones found inside the 4th century BC tomb uncovered in Amphipolis in northern Greece

[link to www.ancient-origins.net]

What they say it is probably a family tomb but we still need a DNA test.

The main skeleton is of an old woman over 60 years old, 1.57 meters hight but she isnt the ealier buried there.

Then they found 2 younger men, 35-45 years old. These are buried later than the woman. One of them has signs of murdering by a knife or sword (probably sword)

The fourth person is a newborn infant, no more news on it.

The oldest person (who probably owns the main tomb as it is older than all the rest) is burned, but we have no more info so far, just that burning a dead shows someone important and rich (as it costed more to burn someone).
So with this find and the whole tomb which is very important as an architectural structure and has rich art inside it, must be of someone really important.

They also found some animal bones some of them seem to be of horses (or type of horses).

Re: 5 people buried in the ancient tomb of Amphipolis
So now again, we have this big debate from archeologists and historians on the question:

Could Alexander the Great be buried in Amphipolis?
Could he be the "burned" person no 5?

The ones pro, say that it is very probable. Their claim is based in some historical facts like:

a) While Alexander died in 323 bc in Babylon he remained there embalmed in honey for 2 years and only moved towards Egypt in 321bc, Could it be that they waited for a tomb to be constructed for him back in Macedonia?
b) Same in Egypt the tomb at Memphis was temporarily. And some decates after his body was brought to Alexandria.
c) When Serapeum in Alexandria was distroyed by Christian mob or/and roman soldiers, probably Alexanders tomb was destroyed too (+_391ac)
What they say is that probably followers of the old greek religion could have already taken the remains of Alexander to save them from total destruction.
d) If the woman is Olympias, then the two men could be her grandsons.

The ones against, say
a) Alexander's tomb at Alexandria was destroyed by the mob. End of story.
b) Olympias was younger when she died (57 years old) and not over 60 (oh well)
c) Olympias was murdered in Pydna, probably buried there too, though we have no excavations at the toumpa there, we have found some inscriptions that lead that this was probably some of her descendant's tomb.

why can't they just let the dead lie in peace?

Why preserve a body for 2 years, only to later burn it?

Interesting read either way.

Because this is the way archeology works and we get more information about the past

bump

...

If this is true, to me it is actually quite shocking

VERY shocking indeed

I really don't what to say, other than I'm into Greek history/mythology(Gods and Goddesses) and Alexander was essentially like a 'demi-god' or manifest deity if you will

Well, mummification is not a Greek way of burial. It was Babylonean (Persian) and Egyptian. Burning was a way of Greek burial. But i guess if you want to save some remains it is easier to move burned bones than a whole mummified body.

This reminds me of a yt video, and some articles scattered here and there...

I don't remember much except they were looking for this tomb

It's like finding the Tomb of Tutankhamen in the the valley of the Pharaohs, except much more important

Hell, Alexander conquered Egypt(and a lot of other territory)
Built Alexander and the Lighthouse, one the 7 wonders of the world...

This is why the Indiana Jones films were so popular!

Though much of the ancient world has been already found during the last centuries (esp from 1800s-till today) i think there are still a lot of amazing things to be found.

I believe so as well

A lot of our ancient past is being rediscovered, I believe it
is helping to bridge the divide between 'then' and 'now'
Then, of course was very different and just as strange and mysterious as it is today. Helps to keep us interested in life and the cosmos I think
