Heads Up People This Is Everywhere !!!Avian influenza confirmed in Idaho H5N1
[link to www.idahostatejournal.com]

The H5N2 strain of avian influenza virus was confirmed in three falcons from a private, non-commercial flock in Canyon County, Idaho and was a result of recent contact with wild waterfowl. The flock is currently under quarantine and additional viral testing is being conducted on the remaining birds. Additionally, a small backyard poultry flock in Canyon County, Idaho was identified as having chickens positive for H5N2. That flock was immediately put under quarantine and the birds have been depopulated.

“Both the H5N8 and H5N2 strains of HPAI confirmed in Idaho have previously been identified in incidents in backyard domestic poultry and wild fowl in other northwestern states. It is critical that backyard flock owners and poultry producers take every opportunity to prevent contact between domestic birds and the wild waterfowl that carry the avian influenza virus” said Dr. Bill Barton, ISDA State Veterinarian.

WDFW is asking for anyone who finds a sick or dead wild bird to immediately call 800/606-8768. Waterfowl are carriers of the disease, but predatory birds like hawks, falcons and eagles can spread the flu as well.

The WDFW is also asking hunters to submit their harvested birds for a brief test. The department is focusing its efforts on Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston and Clark counties.

“The sampling procedure takes less than a minute per bird. It will help us determine the prevalence of the disease in wild birds,” said Don Kraege of the WDFW. “Waterfowl are carriers of the disease, but often don’t show symptoms. The primary risk is to domestic chickens and turkeys.”

There's been worldwide coverage of this in the Ebola thread.

Posts from this afternoon:

Avian influenza confirmed in Idaho

BOISE – The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) has initiated a multi-agency investigation following the confirmation of a highly pathogenic strain of the avian influenza virus (HPAI), originating from wild waterfowl, in western and southern Idaho.

The incidents of HPAI recently found in Washington, Oregon, California and Utah, led USDA Wildlife Services and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to increase routine disease surveillance of wild waterfowl in common migratory regions of Idaho. Surveillance conducted in Gooding County identified several cases of H5N8 avian influenza in wild ducks.

Thank you for posting this. My husband and I are "Friends" of McCormick's Creek State Park in Indiana.

Last year many of the caves were closed due to sicknesses in the bats. We lost hundreds of them although now some colonies appear to be recovering due to a lot of careful intervention by wildlife biologists and concerned teams of park supporters who were instructed on what to do and when, all under supervision by park rangers of course.

We were informed that this year, field biologists are going out early to test populations of wild birds due to fear of Avian flu. There are multiple bird sanctuaries within this park that trails come close to but do not allow public interference with the birds.

The devastation potential to the park and wildlife is significant.

There have been tens of thousands of birds, both wild and domestic, that have either died due to the disease or were exterminated because they belonged to a flock that had significant presence of illness. This is just in the US and Canada alone.

South west Idaho:

Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian area

Maybe 10-20 miles from Boise. Location was not given. There is a large wildlife refuge there

" Several cases of avian flu have been confirmed in Idaho, according to Idaho state veterinarian Bill Barton.

State agencies in the region determined several wild waterfowl were infected and that the birds spread avian flu to falcons in a non-commercial flock in Canyon County. Some Canyon County backyard chickens also tested positive for the virus, according to Barton.

Around the world there is a massive depopulating of duck, chickens, turkeys - any farmed birds + suspicious of flu - the bird doc just doesnt have time to visit them ALL

The real bomb shell is the flu hitting China where there is massive chance for the virus to mutate.

All this has been well predicted and documented in first few chapters The End of Food back in 2007

Yeah, if it's in 2C it's in Ada County as well (Boise, Meridian area)... right in the largest population center in Idaho. Lake Lowell is a wildlife refuge (in 2C - or Canyon County), and is packed with waterfowl all year, and then we have the Birds of Prey wildlife refuge in Kuna, which is in Ada County. And, of course, the Snake River runs right through here, so there are a lot of nesting areas around.

Lots and lots of possibilities for spread.

What makes this scenario more doomish than say african hemorrhaging fevers, is that the virus lives on a huge number of HOSTS ie birds in the wild and farmed poultry that ends in the huge amounts of diners, fast food boxes, etc THAT YOU ARENT AWARE OF AND NEVER SEE.

In every host the virus multiplies. Mostly they are defended against and there's no fatality.

When it gets interesting is when migratory birds carry it to all the areas of the world.....

so that THE VIRUS HAS HAD INFINITE CHANCE OF MUTATING creating more virulent strains..

Their immune system is no doubt compromised (in fish, birds, small mammals) yet a virus has a defineate signature.

There's strain A - H5, H7, H9
Strains B and C
PLUS mutating virus "strains"

"There are many different strains of influenza B viruses and of influenza A subtypes. New strains of influenza viruses appear and replace older strains. This process occurs through antigenic drift. When a new strain of human influenza virus emerges, antibody protection that may have developed after infection or vaccination with an older strain may not provide protection against the new strain."

Chicken wire actually has very large holes (3/4" to 1 1/2"). It's designed to keep chickens in and nothing more. It's not protective against anything.

A solid roof (plastic, tin, etc) will keep wild bird crap out.
