The incidents of HPAI recently found in Washington, Oregon, California and Utah, led USDA Wildlife Services and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to increase routine disease surveillance of wild waterfowl in common migratory regions of Idaho. Surveillance conducted in Gooding County identified several cases of H5N8 avian influenza in wild ducks. [link to m.idahostatejournal.com] Thank you for posting this. My husband and I are "Friends" of McCormick's Creek State Park in Indiana. Last year many of the caves were closed due to sicknesses in the bats. We lost hundreds of them although now some colonies appear to be recovering due to a lot of careful intervention by wildlife biologists and concerned teams of park supporters who were instructed on what to do and when, all under supervision by park rangers of course. We were informed that this year, field biologists are going out early to test populations of wild birds due to fear of Avian flu. There are multiple bird sanctuaries within this park that trails come close to but do not allow public interference with the birds. The devastation potential to the park and wildlife is significant. The flock is currently under quarantine and additional viral testing is being conducted on the remaining birds. Additionally, a small backyard poultry flock in Canyon County, Idaho was identified as having chickens positive for H5N2. That flock was immediately put under quarantine and the birds have been depopulated. “Both the H5N8 and H5N2 strains of HPAI confirmed in Idaho have previously been identified in incidents in backyard domestic poultry and wild fowl in other northwestern states. It is critical that backyard flock owners and poultry producers take every opportunity to prevent contact between domestic birds and the wild waterfowl that carry the avian influenza virus” said Dr. Bill Barton, ISDA State Veterinarian. |

This is just in the US and Canada alone. |

Location was not given. There is a large wildlife refuge there " Several cases of avian flu have been confirmed in Idaho, according to Idaho state veterinarian Bill Barton. State agencies in the region determined several wild waterfowl were infected and that the birds spread avian flu to falcons in a non-commercial flock in Canyon County. Some Canyon County backyard chickens also tested positive for the virus, according to Barton. All this has been well predicted and documented in first few chapters The End of Food back in 2007 |

Lake Lowell is a wildlife refuge (in 2C - or Canyon County), and is packed with waterfowl all year, and then we have the Birds of Prey wildlife refuge in Kuna, which is in Ada County. And, of course, the Snake River runs right through here, so there are a lot of nesting areas around. Lots and lots of possibilities for spread. |

In every host the virus multiplies. Mostly they are defended against and there's no fatality. When it gets interesting is when migratory birds carry it to all the areas of the world..... so that THE VIRUS HAS HAD INFINITE CHANCE OF MUTATING creating more virulent strains.. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67215427 Their immune system is no doubt compromised (in fish, birds, small mammals) yet a virus has a defineate signature. There's strain A - H5, H7, H9 Strains B and C PLUS mutating virus "strains" "There are many different strains of influenza B viruses and of influenza A subtypes. New strains of influenza viruses appear and replace older strains. This process occurs through antigenic drift. When a new strain of human influenza virus emerges, antibody protection that may have developed after infection or vaccination with an older strain may not provide protection against the new strain." I donot think anything will perch on that, not turkey wire, but "chicken" the holes are a lot smaller. Even a mouse might have trouble getting in. Chicken wire actually has very large holes (3/4" to 1 1/2"). It's designed to keep chickens in and nothing more. It's not protective against anything. A solid roof (plastic, tin, etc) will keep wild bird crap out. Everyone is worth knowing. Everything is worth learning. You're never too good. You're never not good enough. |
