COMET TAIL: Receding Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2)
COMET TAIL: Receding Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) has faded a bit from its peak brightness earlier this month, but it is still a spectacular comet. Trace the tormented streamers of gas flowing from the comet's icy nucleus in this deep-sky exposure from astrophotographer Gerald Rhemann of Puchenstuben, Austria:

Actually, that was only half of Lovejoy's tail. Click here to see the rest.

The many kinks, eddies and whorls propagating down the tail are caused by an unknown combination of (1) variable activity in the comet's nucleus and (2) gusts of solar wind buffeting the streamers of emerging gas. Every time astronomers photograph the structure, it looks different. Indeed, this is one of the most dynamic comets in years.

Shining like a star of magnitude 4.4, Comet Lovejoy is a difficult target for the naked eye, but as Rheman's photo shows, it is a wonderful subject for deep-sky photography. The comet is currently passing through the constellation Aries high in the evening sky. The Minor Planet Center has published an ephemeris for accurate pointing of telescopes.

Amazing photos! Just beautiful!
We don't have a T.V. Snoop. Is the media giving
this any attention at all? I have heard that in
comparison to the huge hype they gave ISON and
others, that they're almost ignoring Lovejoy Q2!
Do you know?
Just wondered!

Short answer is yes I agree. I mentioned a week or so ago on my 67P thread that the viewing (with astronomical) binoculars on a tripod would be good over the following weeks to the end of the month as the comet climbed higher in the sky and we passed the new moon. (not everybody has a scope and camera that like to view comets.)

The images posted at spaceweather are really good. My opinion is that comets are downplayed by the big boys with the big toys as evidenced by the ISON amateur observing campaign. Bruce Gary did some good work on ISON as an amateur at his website. Lovejoy is right up there with the activity of ISON. ISON developed wings, which I was thinking Lovejoy might.

Should be great pics coming for another week at least - !!

I think I do know the answer now O.

Lovejoy C/2014 Q2, the one that is still producing awesome images, came into our system from the south, underneath the ecliptic plane of the planets. It crossed the ecliptic closest to Earth.

Before it got close to our ecliptic its orbital period was about 13,000 years - the time it takes to make one complete orbit. By the time it got to the ecliptic, the period has dropped to about 8,000 years, I'm told.

Standard science says the drop is due to planetary influence but this comet had none due to its orbit off the ecliptic plane, nor was it subject to capture when comets come in on the ecliptic plane.

IMHO, that's one main reason, if not the reason, for the media silence of Lovejoy. An alternate theory suggests that the comet is subject to tail drag which causes the reduced orbit.

Something I have always wondered, do comet conspiracy theorists actually go out and look at comets ? Have you been observing this one ?
