The older people get, the more they start looking at age as a competition. Like, when they're in an assisted living facility, let's say "Ethel" sees herself as "beating" "Robert" because Robert just died (and she's still alive). This materializes into all kinds of macabre humour -- as they're always trying to give each other bad advice and take away one another's will to live. When this activity/information spills out to the younger-masses it is grossly misinterpreted (as is the case here).
