You probably pronounce medina wrong. Its meh-die-nah rather than meh-dee-nah. And who knows why its called that. The city was founded in the early half of the 19th century.

Okay...what about "Mahomet" which is a variant of "Mohammed"?

And I just learned there is a place called "Mecca" in California.

According to Wikipedia, Medina,OH was originally called Mecca; but had to change it's name because Ohio already had a Mecca.

No. They're not "Sharia zones". It may be hard for many people to believe these days but until the last half of the 20th Century, Muslims and their faith were highly respected in the US (and worldwide). Muslims weren't always terrorists (not that most of them are these days). Radical Revolutionary Islam is a relatively new invention. It's sad that things have turned out the way they have. But like anything, religions are dynamic and change over time. Heck, no Christian ever even heard of a "rapture" until the 18th Century when Cotton Mather (a Puritan preacher) invented it. And now, it's a prevailing theory amongst American evangelicals. Perhaps popular Islam will swing back to its once-famous academic roots and away from barbarism. Lets hope so, eh?

My Uncle belongs to Medina golf club in Illinois and I believe they have held the US open there...

My boss lives in medina oh. I have to go to his place all the time for this or that. Medina is nothing but rich conservative white Christians. So it is pretty scary.
