Chugiakian (OP) User ID: 66510714 United States 01/27/2015 10:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm not in Alaska anymore. Do you at least have people right now you're talking too or a pub within distance to get inside from the cold and talk you thru the storm? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67198501 Thanks for the questions. We get pretty extreme ranges of temps/weather here, so a storm to us that is severe, would shut down most cities. We just keep on, business as usual, we just deal with it. - Cell phone towers were still in operation, so was not that concerned. Hunkered down in place, power came back on after about an hour.... After I was already in bed. It was the entire neighborhood that was without power. There is a "pub" within (long) walking distance, but better off, keeping the house sealed up, and not open the doors. Years ago, power was out around Christmas for about 3 days. we just went to relatives house and waited it out, so it was not that big of a deal, but that was 20+ years ago. If it was a going to be 'days' without power, then this is a different story. I would look to take other measures....... I do have a gas powered generator, which I could turn on, but would have to dig it out, dust it off and get it started. It is not connected to the house, but it runs independently. I could run the freezer, keep it cold. run the well (I think) 220? have to double check..... Our stove is a gas stove, so the burners can be 'manually' lit. This doesn't help the downstairs tho. We do not have a fire stove, but I do have barrel stove that I could bring in an rig up, this would take several hours tho. Thinking that this might be something else I would want to 'address'. Fortunately we are not on the same grid as the rest of the US, and the local power company is pretty good. geesh, only thought I was prepared....... more work to do. Chugiakian |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 67198501 United States 01/27/2015 05:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A lot of people flock to Anchorage during the winter. It's always well in Anchorage. I'd be sitting there at, " Chilkoot charlies " myself. If you do go soon to there tell Wicked Wanda in the bird house that Eve says hey. heh |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 67198501 United States 01/27/2015 05:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | out past the bridge to nowhere. Is the bar there in your town closer to you? If I was alone there that's where I'd go but it sounds like you are with people. Over the Summer you should build a small cabin and put a steam machine in it. Those are nice in the winter. Stick a Victorian bath tub with the porcelain legs outside. It feels so good to jump in one of those after some steam. Me personally would want the gas thing or at least a fully loaded generator. What do you people do all day when it storms like this? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 67198501 United States 01/27/2015 05:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | people in Alaska are hardened and could give a shit about a power outage. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56619891 It takes a lot of work to live in Alaska. I don't think it's hardened though. That's harsh! There's generators, propane tanks, and natural gas. There is worlds beyond electricity. That's not hardened. It's actually kind of nice... |

I went to bed, cuddled next to my wife and woke up an hour later when the power came back on. at our cabin, we do not have power, so we just stoke the fire and go back to bed, wake up and throw another log on the fire, and go back to bed, wake up and start the fire again, after it had gone out......so........ it depends..... Lots of babies are born in the fall, due to long nights, and cold temps..... Stay warm! :campfire: Chugiakian |
