Jordanian Communications Minister Mohammed Al Momani said the government was prepared to release Rishawi if Lt Kaseasbeh was released unharmed.

However, suspicions are growing the captured pilot may not be healthy or alive after the Jordanian government asked about his condition.

ISIL has not responded to the request for information, and Lt Kaseasbeh has not appeared in any of the group's videos.

Mr Goto has also not appeared live in a video since he was shown kneeling by executioner Jihadi John in the group's original ransom demand.

Islamic State (IS) Sunni jihadists have announced on Twitter that Jordan had freed terrorist Sajida al-Rishawi, and that she was already "in the land of the Caliphate". They also said Japanese hostage Kenji Goto was no longer being held by IS but was on his way to Jordan from Syria. There was, however, no proof of any handover. Jordan has previously said it would be prepared to free al-Rishawi, an aspiring Iraqi suicide bomber arrested after an attack in 2005 that left dozens of people dead, in exchange for the Jordanian pilot captured in Syria. A Jordanian government spokesman, Mohammed Al Momani, said in a statement that the priority was to safeguard the life of military pilot Muadh Al Kasasbeh, captured by the IS on Christmas Eve in Raqqa, and that al-Rishawi would be freed if the pilot returned safe and sound.
