You can throw out all the food you want as long as it is in the yard waste receptacle, and not the normal trash receptacle.

It costs big money to ship all that trash to a land fill in Oregon and they don't want it weighted down with food scraps and wet paper towels.

this one is fun.

having 2 waste receptacles DOUBLES the amount of plastic used to service a household.

there is a HUGEcost attached to manufacturing, transporting, and using twice the number of trash receptacles.

this far more than kills any imagined benefit.

and where will all these extra heavy-duty plastic containers be in 50 years?

in our landfills - thanks libs.

Leftists don't give a damn about the environment. They give a damn about FEELING GOOD by telling everyone they CARE.

The truth is that it doesn't matter if food rots in a landfill or in your backyard.

This is about control, just like it always is with liberals. They have spent the last 30 years complaining about garbage that isn't bio-degradable. Now they are bitching about food that IS bio-degradable.

It is amazing to me that people put up with this nonsense.

Liberalism belongs in the garbage.

Why oh why do libs have to be so stoopid?!?!

Snip..

Food waste is both an economic and environmental burden. Transporting the waste, especially for distances as far as Seattle does, is costly. So too is allowing it to sit out in the open, where it produces methane, one of the most harmful greenhouses gases, as it rots. The second largest component of landfills in the United States is organic waste, and landfills are the single largest source of methane gas.

You can throw out all the food you want, just put it in the compost pile not the garbage. yes, you have to change your habits but duh, its a no-brainer to hep make people more sustainable on the planet. make less garbage people ok? recycle what you can, compost what you can.

Methane! You know what that sounds like, something illegal!

Greenhouse gases, something natural in Seattle that isn't a coffee bean, it must be a terrorist plot.

Mold grows on things that are ...organic. Mold could be eeeeevil!

It's not beneficial for environment. Your environment doesn't need puny mortals. They'd save the environment more if they closed up shop and jumped off a cliff, and you don't see that happening.

Why do that when they can give the extra food to Washington where all the bums are? It's only a state away.

Seattle residents need to switch to more liquid coffee than rotting...green food like things with calories and carbs. Carbs are terrorists you know.

Open fruit, not hidden behind refrigerators that consume energy, that is a bad thing? What fucktards.

It feels good to simple down and not waste so much. Im bsck on the farm. I have to drive my own trash into town. When its for my own convenience I can buy what i eat and not, waste, compost what i can, and, simply avoid buying newpapers and, plastic packaging. Its not a hardship.

Maybe if everyone had to drive our own trash to the dump we,would all become more responsible.

What was a mellow town became a testing ground for the occupation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 48833727

I was right there in the thick of it at the NO WTO protests, mostly as a curious college student. DAMN! It was crazy, I remember smoking a blunt with my friends on top of a bus stop about 15 feet from the line of armored police vehicles and cops with riot shields. Dumpsters of flaming debris and trash blocking the entire intersection on 3 sides.

You'd hear a "poof" and then see tear gas cans flying down the street. Tried to run away but only way was downhill toward the water and the gas followed us. That was a crazy fucking day.

I vaguely recall that unsanitary conditions like rotting garbage and sewage was the cause of the plague in Europe---spread by rats attracted to the "organic" garbage

and of course its not like these bins will ever get gouged and leak or get knocked/turned over.

Re: Seattle to fine residents for, throwing out food!
You are all forgetting. When people have the freedoms to choose, they will choose wrong. Noting wrong with recycling and composting. I'm not quite in Seattle proper. But here, the whole city has big wheeled green bins(30gal,45gal or 60gal. It depends on how wasteful you are. The less you waste the smaller can you can have and lower fee), blue bins (60gal), brown bins (60gal) and a small blue bin for glass bottles. Once a week it's trash and recycle day. Then the next weeks it's yard/food waste days (all in the big brown bin).

What's so hard about that? Nothing. We should all be recycling. I even rinse out my used ziploc bags and recycle them. In the kitchen I have a trash can, a recycle can and a smaller can for food scraps. We can even toss out greasy pizza boxes in the brown yard/food waste bin. With composting and recycling. I just have two standard tall kitchen trash bags of trash for two weeks. If we all composted and recycled, our Earth and us, would be so happy.

My redneck neighbor cares not about recycling. I mean they don't recycle a thing. I've looked. Their recycle bin always has just a couple things in it. Like Hamburger Helper boxes and some Cool Whip tubs. Their family of 4 produces enough trash for a family of 7 or even 8. They even have a bigger size trash (green) bin then most do. Most people have the 45gal, but he has the 60gal. And us people who take a bit of care, can have the little 30gal. That also means I'm paying less. Who doesn't want to pay less? He drinks a lot of cheap BUSCH beer in cans. I asked him a long time ago, to save them and toss them in my recycle bin. He got all mad, accusing me of going to go turn them in for money. Yet he just tosses them in the trash.

When it's the evening before trash day, when we all wheel our bins out. In the cover of dark, I pull on my hoodie, get my Carhartt's on, slip on my gloves and tie my boots. I sneak out to the curb, and get what beer cans I can out of his trash. I usually just find about 20 or 30 cans, but every little bit helps the Earth and me feel good.

I do it for all of you who don't and won't.

Recycling is a trap for the unwary and gullible.

a wonderful science teacher who would love for this to be different revealed this last year in class:

Recycling is a net harm to the environment in all cases except aluminum, which requires a great deal of energy to make.

Paper, plastics et al can be recycled, but the energy required to recycle them brings a net harm to the environment. They are far more renewable than aluminum.

She said to recycle aluminum and forget the rest, the rest is just about training people to recycle.

NOT about doing any real benefit for nature.
