Methane in the brain?! Microbes maybe
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19987415

Bacteria from the gut and airways invade into adjacent structures and spread through vascular channels everywhere.
CO2 is the final decomposition product often going through a methane phase.
This is why CO2 restriction is illogical because any organic carbon eventually will spontaneously decay to CO2 with or without some other intermediate step.

Right...there are a great many other factors, too long to discuss here, that indicate this was no accident but LE was not aware of any of it due to the case being transferred across the state line [over 30 yrs ago]

If it was no accident then I can't help but think LE investigators also knew but decided not to investigate it. This would require either falsifying the ME report or the locals simply ignoring it.

I've got a request in to get a copy of the ME report but I have a feeling it "disappeared"...just a hunch.

ooops....if there was a "hole" in skull this tells me a good majority if not all of skull was intact...definitely would exhume body if ME report is not more specific or not located

The vic left home with a .22cal rifle. NO ONE outside of the family knew this. The rifle was never found or even mentioned again.

Investigators never knew this but found a possible bullet hole to the head which they dismissed. This information was never released and was apparently only considered for less than 24hrs.

Somehow the spouse knew at the time there might have been a bullet hole to the vic's head.

The vic left home alone in a boat to get a "box" from the island. The next day a "box" was reported found, partially opened...at the edge of town.

By an anonymous "neighbor"

Two days later the vic was reported missing.

The vic was found 6 days later in the slough on the island.

So how did the "box" get to the edge of town if the vic went to the island and died?

Investigators knew nothing of these things...

Exhumation is really not an option as this is a family matter I was "warned" to stop looking in to a few years ago...by my family.

I have no doubt that a hole would be found just above his right eye from a small cal. bullet if the body were exhumed.

I don't need to exhume the body...I'm sure it was no accident I just wanted to know if I'm off my rocker in considering the possibility LE investigators may have simply covered it up as an accidental death.

hehe no....motive? Oh the rabbit hole runs very deep!

Money, Abuse, Drunken Rage, Heat of the moment? Take your pick

I've been on this thing for 10 years now and I found out too late I had inadvertently kicked the proverbial bee's nest but by that time it was too late to turn back.

Now it seems we all just fear each other, not that we were ever close but it does make phone conversations rather awkward anymore.

Re: Is there a Coroner in the house? Body decomposition question
You must understand, even if body was in full decomposition, the skull would not decompose, therefore the brain would not be seeping out, unless the cranial had either an injury from perhaps a bullet, or some sort of blunt force wound that shattered or put a hole in the bone.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67379039

Right...from what I've read the brain will in fact putrefy in 3-4 days. And obviously this will produce gases.

BUT there has to be some kind of penetration of the actual skull ie injury or fracture, before any of the gas is ever going to escape at the forehead area in a manner consistent with a HOLE as the deputy saw.

I'm leaning towards bullet hole and coverup personally.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1280257

Most LIKELY it was a bullet or otherwise something else that caused a hole in the head! Could be a cover-up, but since the case is 35 plus year old, it could also be serious incompetence on the behalf of the coroner.
I'm afraid, this probable homicide may never be solved.
Curious, what is your interest in this old case? You sort of sound like you're in law enforcement?

I've only been working to solve it for my own sake, I'm not in law enforcement or anything like that.

As for incompetence

Until reading these replies I just never even considered incompetence. Picture the convo there...

Deputy: we got this body we'd normally rule a drowning and not bother you with but we think there's a bullet hole to the forehead, can you check that out?

Coroner: Sure thing, send me the body! I'll check it out tonight and have an answer in the morning.

*we are talking about confirming whether there is actually a bullet hole in the forehead here...not whether he drowned or not, which was secondary to why the body was sent to the State ME for the autopsy instead of local*

<<next day>>>

Deputy: So...about those bubbles I saw coming from that guy's head, boy that sure looked like a bullet hole, what did you find out?

Coroner: Bullet hole? Bubbles?...oh...yea, uhh...that was...uhh...just uhh gas from his brain leaking out in that one spot.

Deputy: Really?!

Coroner: I know right?! Weird huh!
