Quoting: Abba 67574628 Did anyone else see this awesome sight, and perhaps tell me why were they migrating so late in the season ?[youtube] It's time for them to head back south. When they do it is up to them I guess; they know more than we do about that sort of thing. There is nothing quite as compelling as a bad idea whose time has come... Thulsa |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 46796076 Canada 02/01/2015 12:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Many don't migrate at all anymore. 60 years ago 100% migrated in the usual pattern established at the end of the last ice age. Nobody really knows why that is happening. Some birds now will stay year round as long as there is still open water they can drink out of. If the ice freezes up where they are they will wander looking for open water. That's probably what they were doing. They weren't migrating. |

Maybe availability of food and water over winter has changed. Jack Miner was the first to effect a change in CG migration habits. After he built his sanctuary in the early 20'th century South of Windsor the geese started staying at his place in large numbers for about a week to eat Jack's free corn, which they had never done previous to that. In fact even the route that takes them over his farm was not even very heavily traveled before the sanctuary went into operation. He proved that the pattern can be changed, but nobody can point to any reason with any degree of certainty why this more recent change happened. |

Here in Burlington (at the edge of Oakville) I see them flying around most days. There's a little lake across the way that they really like, but when it freezes over (as has been the past couple of weeks), they just seem to head down to Lake Ontario for some open water. Just before this bunch of snow last week, there were dozens of them across the street at the golf course feeding on the brown grass :) |

Thought I was seeing things! I'm in Mississauga. I am right by Lake Ontario. They were not heading south though, they were heading north. |
