Some of us can't have children so having a pet or pets is the next best thing. We all need someone or something to love in our lives. They are cheaper as well. My two dachshunds Bobby and Poppy are from the same litter and we couldn't bear to separate them. They answer to "kids" because they are as good as.. When my three-year old niece comes to stay we have to be careful because she kicks out at the dogs, they get stressed and Poppy will nip her if she gets too close. The dogs are as soft as butter when we're on our own which is more than can be said for a toddler. When Bobby had disc disease in his back and couldn't walk I didn't hesitate in the slightest when the vet quoted £7,000 ($12,000) for emergency surgery. (He is completely healed now.) Fortunately I care enough about the dogs and they are well-insured. (Many children aren't in insurance cultures like the US.) All those with pets without insurance are a disgrace in a supposedly pet-loving society.

Ever see somebody who has lost a real child? Their human son or daughter dies and then they're scarred for life. Well, these PET-tard people, people who consider dogs and cats their literal kids, they lose anywhere between 10-15 "kids" in their lifetime. That's why they're so screwed up.

I don't think of my cat as a 'child' or whatever, but I do like him enough that I care for him, and if he had to die I care enough to not let anyone else put him down but me. I owe him that much.

Agreed, many people go way overboard with the pets, but to go to the opposite extreme is equally unhealthy. Too little empathy and attachment is just as bad as too much.

It can also be cultural. I grew up on a farm. Animal companionship normalizes things for me because I was around pets and working dogs/cats and livestock from early childhood, so when I moved to the city and live alone, taking a cat with me helps remind me of home.

My 2 pitbulls are my children. My furry son turned 3 monday and my furry daughter will be 3 later this month. We do little home birthday parties for each one, with party hats and cupcakes. When I leave the house to get the kids from school Ill tell the dogs Im leaving to get their brothers. My husband is their dad and Im their mom. We will say "go get mommy/daddy" when we play with them. They dont wear clothes or anything, but they are part of our family. People who dont see their dogs as part of the family are usually the ones who neglect them :(
