Slavery was merely a secondary objective. The primary objective of the South's secession was the preservation of State's Rights, and the preservation of the Constitution. The North was also killing the South's economy with high tariff rates on the import/export of cotton and other primarily Southern commodities. The North did not give to sh!ts about slaves. That is what we are taught now, as it appears to give the North the moral high-ground, while making the South seem evil. If the North cared so much about slaves, then why was it illegal for a black person to even STEP FOOT in Lincoln's home state, Illinois? That's right. Illinois passed the Illinois Black Code in 1853. Newly freed blacks would be lashed if found in Illinois. Most of us have grown up only hearing one side of the story. Yet most are so assured in their belief, even though they only have half the information! To learn more about what drove the South to secede from the Union, read Jefferson Davis's farewell address to the Senate, his two inaugural addresses, and the Confederate Constitution. Another great resource is The South Was Right (book). |
