We are told when Jesus returns it will be on a cloud; but this verse doesn't indicate he's returning, but judging those on earth:

Rev 14:14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73233531

Rev 14:14 commentaries from bible hub:

THE HARVEST.

(14) And I looked . . .—Better, And I saw, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one seated like to a son of man, having upon his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. There can be little doubt that Christ Himself is here intended: the “cloud” (Matthew 24:30; Acts 1:9), the expression “Son of man” (comp. John 5:27 and Daniel 7:13), the “crown,” the general resemblance to the vision in Revelation 1 (see Revelation 1:7-13), indicate as much. The “crown” is the crown of victory; the hour of conquest is at hand. The sickle shows that the harvest has come....

Mathew Henry:

The enemies of Christ and his church are not destroyed, till by their sin they are ripe for ruin, and then he will spare them no longer. The wine-press is the wrath of God, some terrible calamity, probably the sword, shedding the blood of the wicked. The patience of God towards sinners, is the greatest miracle in the world; but, though lasting, it will not be everlasting; and ripeness in sin is a sure proof of judgment at hand.....

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73505928

Rev 14:15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

From biblestudytools:

The harvest is used throughout the Scriptures to symbolize the final gathering and separation of that which is desirable and productive (wheat) from that which is useless and for the fire (tares, chaff). The judgment attending the harvest is often represented by the threshing floor where the grain is separated from the outer husk (2S. 2S. 24:16; 1Chr. 1Chr. 21:15; Jer. Jer. 51:33; Dan. Dan. 2:35; Mic. Mic. 4:12).1

For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: “The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor When it is time to thresh her; yet a little while and the time of her harvest will come.” (Jer. Jer. 51:33)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73517991

Rev 14:16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73531297

Rev 14:17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

There will be another harvest - but this one will be a judgement....

Jesus talks about this harvest and what it represents in Matthew 13 - The parable of the tares and the wheat:

"The One who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world; and the good seed—these are the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Therefore, just as the weeds are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather from His kingdom everything that causes sin and those guilty of lawlessness. They will throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. It stands to reason that the 'good harvest' happens first - removes the 'wheat' out of harms way.

5th seal of Revelation - the saints who were under the alter and killed for the testimony of Jesus ask 'how long before the Lord takes revenge on those who murdered us'?

God tells them - a little while longer.

This is the revenge for the saints that God promised:

Rev 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

11 And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellow servants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

You make a very good point.

Most Jews in Israel won't be paying attention to the temple in the temple mount.

Things go viral pretty quickly these days.

So, if the antichrist is standing in the temple declaring he is God - this is HUGE and will go viral - such that those in a field, on a rooftop or in Judea will get the message by the means you list & check it out.

When they see him standing in the holy place - the next thing they need to do is flee to the mountains without returning home for anything, because God says he will provide for them and protect them.

There is little doubt they've spilled millenia of saint's blood.

IMO - it depends on whether or not they accept Jesus after the gog magog war.

Small excerpt from Joel Rosenberg's commentary gog magog war pt 3:

Ezekiel 39:21 — “I will set My glory among the nations; and all the nations will see My judgment which I have executed and My hand which I have laid on them.”

Did you catch that? “All” the nations will “see” God’s glory and judgment. Today, we are living in the first generation in human history where because of the miracle of global satellite television technology people in every country on the planet will be able to watch the prophecies of the Bible come true before their very eyes.

As a result, I believe Ezekiel 38-39 describes the end of Radical Islam — and effectively the end of all of Islam — as we have known it. When the God of Israel destroys the forces of Radical Islam supernaturally while Muslims watch on Al Jazeera, how will they wake up the day after and believe that the Qur’an is true and that Muhammad is a true prophet? The vast majority of Muslims will abandon Islam.

Jer. 51:33)

Rev 14:16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped

Rev 14:17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

There will be another harvest - but this one will be a judgement....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73537507

Rev 14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

Time has run out for those on earth - they had a chance to change from worshiping satan and the beast but didn't.

Many believe the day of the Lord is one day.

Vernon McGee of Thru the bible says the day of the Lord - starts with the great tribulation through to the end of the millennial reign.

This verse appears to support Dr McGee:

Seal 6

Rev 6:17 For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

These verses support people who say it's literally a day:

Isaiah 13:8-10

8 They will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame. 9Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. 10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light

Matthew 24

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken....
