As the answer above suggests the mark and the number are not necessarily the same thing - Although it appears from the next verse ALL must take the mark:

My thoughts are you need the mark - possibly for communications to take place i.e. supplants the smartphone.

One thing to note in Rev 13:17 is it doesn't say just victory over his number, but victory over the number of his name.

Many people speculate that 666 is the number of letters the AC has in his name i.e. Edward has 6 letters.

Notice it also says - the name of the beast.

Perhaps we need the name of the beast to figure out the number of his name?

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding

We're told he won't be revealed unto he stands in the temple declaring he is god.

Is it possible to figure out who it is before that time?

Verse 18 seems to imply - it is.

Next part of verse 18 - count the number of the beast

If one has understanding they are told to start counting.

If we want to count the number of the beast - we have to know what the beast is.

Is this beast the new world order (verse 1), or the antichrist?

How do we know the Six hundred threescore and six equals 666?

There are plenty of places in the bible that tell us the great tribulation in 3 1/2 years.

Since we know certain events occur in the great tribulation i.e. the woman who flees into the wilderness, and the 2 witnesses - we can compare their numbers. What we get is the threescore means 60.

Rev 18:18

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Dan 12:11
And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Revelation 12:6
And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Revelation 11:3
And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

Supporting verse for Daniel 12:11 that this is the start of the great tribulation would be:

Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place....

21 For then shall be great tribulation

Once again we can use verses from Matthew 24 to support Rev 12:6 ....the woman flees

Matt 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation...

16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains...

Additional verses supporting that this is the great tribulation and the period of time the antichrist is in power:

Dan 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Rev 12:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

Continuing with this verse:

Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Depending whether this verse is referring to the beast or antichrist - How you count the number would be different.

The beast - if it is the new world order it could be a number referring to the EU or ottoman empire i.e. say the ottoman empire lasted 666 years. That could very well be the number of the beast. But it didn't. It was in existence for 624 years.

From wikipedia - the ethopian empire was 666 years.

I really don't think the ethopian empire qualifies as the beast.

If we look at the 'age' of the EU From the inception of it's history - it is almost 66 years old. It wouldn't qualify as the beast, but one of it's heads(out of 7).

According to wikipedia it's history starts in 1951, the Treaty of Paris was signed, creating the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC)....

From there it expanded to other treaties until it renamed itself the EU.

Rev 13:18 starts with 'here is wisdom'. Presumably one gains wisdom with age.

Perhaps the 666 can be broken up with a decimal point where we say 66.6 is the age of the 7th head that receives the mortal wound i.e. in about a year or so the EU will collapse.

Rev 13:1 [I saw] a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads....

3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast......and they worshipped the beast.

It's the 7th head that is wounded aka the EU....

The reason I am certain the 7th head receives the wound is found in these 2 verses:

Rev 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

Rev 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

I won't go into too much detail except to say Rev 17:11 says the beast is the eighth king, following the 7 kings that are on the beast. But the eighth king is merely and extension of the 7th.

Rev 13:14 tell us that the people of the earth should make an image of the head that had the wound i.e. the 7th.

And this image is now the 8th or the 'new beast' aka The New World Order.
