an elderly man (prob living alone) after heart surgery is going to be groggy and on medication. an abundance of caution should have been used. its one thing to draw as soon as you see a gang banger brandish a weapon, its another to shoot an old man in his own home, who probably couldnt hit the broad side of a barn in his condition.

In the late 80's I took care of an elderly neighbor and ended up helping her elderly step-father. The West Hollywood police called me one day about "Oscar". They wanted me to come to the station. I walked in and they were really nice and told me Oscar almost got shot in his home by the police.

Oscar was a WWII vet who fought Rommel in Africa then marched across Italy, all the way from the south to the north. At this point, Oscar had Jack Daniel's every morning for breakfast.

The police at the station said Oscar called them saying someone broke in to his house. When they arrived at the house, they walked in to find Oscar sitting in his chair pointing a rifle at them. The cops kept cool and took his gun away. They gave it to me and told me to keep it away from the old guy and talk to him about what almost happened. (then I had to carry the old rifle over my shoulder through the streets of West Hollywood)

I saw Oscar and he had me believing about the "two painted black guys" breaking in. Until I asked him how they got through the security door. "They walked right in through that wall". Oh... I get it now. I kept Oscar's gun.

But the police were so cool. They really cared about my friend and told me how close he came to getting killed. And they were the ones who told me it was no problem to walk through the city streets with a rifle slung over my shoulder.

I've had as many positive experiences with police as negative. This one was one of the good ones.
