Called DNR, the said i was mistaken. "Coyotes" They said. Told my neighbor with beef and dairy cows; he was skeptical. The local deer in the field every eveing are suddenly gone;hiding. Haven't been seen since. Last afternoon 3 miles west saw 30 deer all bunched up in open field nervously watching the treeline. We don't have snow deep enough here for them to "yard up" like that and stay out in the open in broad daylight. It is rural here but not big woods or wilderness. Just got home from sliding into a ditch during a whiteout and i told the guy who pulled me out about the wolves and he confirmed my wolf story. The wolves were behind his house howling the other night.

Wolves "pup" in late February, early march. The cows will be calving soon. This area can't support a Wolf pack of this size, not enough wildlife to support it. People an hour north of here say their deer are practically gone. Be ready Western Wisconsonites. You're going to start hearing about dogs, cats, and livestock getting eaten by next fall and your easy fall deer hunt is about to get tougher to fill your tags.. One wolf eats 35 deer a year.

Yup they are coming back. But it could also be coywolves, a hybrid between wolves and coyotes. These things are big and they are not so afraid of humans. I've seen them walk across a suburban street.

Once they get established, neither hunters nor trappers can clean them out. They are simply too smart.

What finally eliminated the timber wolf was the piper cub airplane.

You can track them in the snow from the air, and a shotgun out the window will do the job. Buckshot.

The old timers (1900 to 1940) used poison bait piles, but that is pretty indiscriminate.

Somewhat better is a treble hook for sharks; bait it with chunks of meat and hang about five to six feet off the ground.

They can easily jump that high and then get hung on the hooks.

Op I didn't catch were you are located. I am in southern Oregon 1500 miles from Yellowstone 800 miles from the wolf packs in western Idaho. We had male wolf show up a year ago strange is it may sound this particular wolf had a collar on that the satellite could keep track of the male. Isn't that odd to start with? Then after watching him go down into northern California he came back our way.. found a female in the northern part of our county .. low and behold now there is 6 pups. viola.. our deer and elk are now in jeporady.

someone planted them all.. it really makes me mad when they play with nature!

Don't worry about cougars. They aren't really dangerous to adults and only rarely attack children. Even children have been known to fight them off.

Fairly easy to hunt with hounds and Wisconsin is full of houndmen.

Wolves are dangerous to even packs of hounds. The wolf is faster and longer winded; will string out a pack of dogs and then turn around and kill dogs one at a time. That is just one wolf. A pack of wolves will make short work of a pack of dogs.

I'm surprised the Wisconsin DNR scoffed at the idea since the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has wolves and Minnesota has some. I would think they could easily migrate into your area.

Yep. I watched a pack of five cross US highway 2 east of Superior Wisconsin about 30 miles...

That was probably about 1975 plus or minus a year.

I absolutely do know the difference between coyotes and wolves; this was early evening with plenty of good light in the early spring.

You are absolutely correct this happened just a few years ago to the Tobuk kid.

Heres the story.

David Tobuk Toddler 1900 Predatory Koyukuk River, Alaska, USA In the 1920s, Tobuk was a Native Alaskan steamboat captain who bore severe scarring as a result of a wolf attack he had suffered as a toddler. He was playing along the riverbank when a wolf appeared out of some bushes, seized Tobuk by the head, lifted and ran off with him in its jaws, but was shot by a nearby man.

Well, he didn't die, and it was is 1900, but well, actually there don't seem to be any children that have ever been killed by wild wolves in North America. But still they have killed a few people this century, so be afraid.

We had a wolf season in wisconsin but 5 wolves over quota got it shut down again. They are protected. I'm an hour north of Eau Claire and an hour from Twin Citeis Metro, MN. I love wolves..in the wilderness. Not in my back yard. I was fascinated with them as a kid and used to raise Malamute/Wolf hybrids in Montana. In a wilderness. setting they are amazing creatures. We could learn a lot from them in the family sense. Their social structure. They raise their young in a way the whole family unti is involved. Aunts, Uncles, previous years siblings, all share in the duties of rearing the pups. Way to much divorce and single parenting going on with out extended family involvement amongst us humans.

I love wolves, know a great deal about them, but they don't belong in farm country and sub burbia.
If interested about the best study ever done is in a book By Farley Mowat "Never cry wolf"

Also should mention the negative impact they are having in western Montana back "HOME". The deer and elk are so decimated that they are hanging outside of towns near people because even the deer and elk are afraid to be in the woods. Especially in the Bitterroot valley south of Missoula.

If you don't believe wolves don't eat people i suggest you ask some rural alaskans ( born there). Even more so in Russian wilderness and eastetn europe borderlands. Napoleans army and WW2 left human corpses strewn frozen across Russia and the wolves acclimated to this easy food source in those times. All fang and claw predators eat people in the right set of circumstances.

They have been introducing the big Canadian wolf all over the west for years. When farmers and ranchers report the the smart ass fish and wildlife employees pull that out that worn old coyote lie.

Anybody who lives where there are coyote knows the difference.

There will be a lot of whimpering from wolf lovers who have never looked eyeball to eyeball with one, and they will try to shout down those who have.

There goes your wild game, you are right. They will clean house on all the wild game, decimate the populations. They will hamstring deer and eat the hind quarters out of them while they are still alive, then leave them to die.

I feel for you, Wisconsin.

The government propaganda department works overtime to convince people that they only kill when hungry, etc. That is a brazen lie. Wolves kill for fun. just like dogs.

Actress Andie MacDowell bought a ranch property up the Nine Mile valley west of Missoula.

She was pro-wolf until she got to see what happens.

QUOTE

They’d purchased a guard dog to protect their children from the large predators that lurked in that area – mountain lions and wolves in particular. Wolves killed the dog, however, eviscerating it next to the kids’ swing set. The wolves’ most recent victim, the Qualleys’ 300-pound calf, lay covered with a tarp. I walked around the site to figure out what happened. Then I skinned the carcass to determine the cause of death. The wolves, I decided, had attacked the calf as it stood next to a salt block, then dragged it about 50 feet, leaving a distinct blood trail. It had been bitten under its front legs and had a hole ripped open in its flank. Massive hemorrhaging killed it. The calf was full of slashes and bites, but the wolves didn’t eat it.

Wolves and predators are part of the natural order. Humans want to live or farm in their territory and kill off all competition. Indians managed to live off the land but modern man does more harm to deer than wild wolves. Hunters take prime specimens for backstrap and trophy antlers. Wolves cull the old, sick, and unprotected calves, which maintains herd health.
The most dangerous animal has two legs and kills the nature he claims to love. Beef cows and sheep destroy the soil and water quality of the fragile arid ecosystems of the "wild" west. How many people have wolves killed? Compare that to how many people are killed by their fellow man every day.

I lived around wolves most of my life. Idiot ranchers made them almost extinct in the lower 48 states. They are being reintroduced but the people in the US are still too redneck and most get shot. The US does not have the consciousness needed to save and species.

Wolves lived in North America with the natives for 25000 years and look at what a bunch of fools from Europe did to this continent in less than 150 years.

My parents lived in NW Ontario (lake of the woods) and timberwolve sightings were commonplace. Alerts would go out to keep small children and pets indoors when natural food sources were scarce.

We would see them on the ice on the lake in front of our place all the time in winter - this time of winter actually. Scary but beautiful.

A few hrs ago a woman was jogging near the alaskan village where she taught school and was killed by wolves. She had her ear buds in and did not know they were on her until it was too late. All large predators are dangerous. Even moose can kill you, easy, with one kick. Eagles and owls kill small pets all the time here. But this is alaska. Normal for wolves here. Ages ago there were lots of wolves in Wisconsin, quess they are making a comeback. Wolf pelts make nice collars and coats, and really nice blanket.

Humans are part of the natural order as well. While i sympathize. with the culture clash the decimated both animal and native populations its impossible for human beings to nostalgically and romanticaly be hunter gatherers on the landscape moving camp with the seasons and seasonal migrations of herd animals. The salmon are nearly gone, the oceans are dying, the overpopulation of peoples is undeniable. As much as i relate to the chip on the shoulders of native americans, we all simply have to adapt to the world as it is, not as it was. Perhaps after the big die off that's coming the survivors can follow herd animals again in hide shelters and stand on the banks of rivers harvesting and smoking fish fish for winter but for now that simply isn't realistic for anyone but a wilderness people. You have no idea how much i could live in the old way, brother, no idea.

I'm in the midwest.
I'm one of the people that was dismissed as crazy for saying that I saw a mountain lion, full grown, walk ,not run ,in broad daylight, through my yard and a horse paddock ,into a field of tall brown grass and "disappear".

It wasn't 60 ft. from me. DNR just sort of chuckled and nodded their heads in a patronizing & condescending way but then a meter reader said that he had been seeing them for some time. Then others started reporting sightings. Then a tracker heard my story and contacted me.

He claims they have been in the area since at least the 1970's but also believes they never really left. A biologist from one of the national parks out west heard the claims as he/she is from the area . His/her father who still lives here had seen a mountain lion from his property. He/she(biologist) was visiting over the holidays at that time and he/she and the tracker asked if they could come out to my property and have a look around. BTW..he/she is stationed in an area where mountain lions are numerous in population yet had never seen one in the wild at that time.
They found numerous scratch trees and other evidence of mountain lion activity. They claimed some of the scratch marks are older indicating the cats have been around quite awhile.

DNR apparently knows and has known but doesn't have the funds or resources to manage them.
I don't want them hunted down and killed (though hunters have known they were here for a longtime) I just think that the public should be informed as to what to do or not to do if they encounter one.
If I catch one threatening my horses I'll kill it.

Don't think they don't stalk and hunt humans. They do! They are opportunistic.
One local lady found mountain lion prints in her own footprints one misty morning as she was out walking her property.

A good book that illustrates a true story of what happens when humans attempt to create a "utopia" is Beast In The Garden . I've forgotten the author's name at the moment. It took place in Boulder Colorado.
