President Barack Obama Thursday (February 12) signed into law legislation designed to offer more help for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder. The bill was prompted by large numbers of returning veterans who are taking their own lives.

The Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act is named for a Marine veteran who took his own life in 2011 at age 28 following tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. It passed unanimously in the House and Senate.

At a crowded White House ceremony, Obama paid tribute to Hunt, who worked to improve health care for fellow veterans at the same time he struggled with post-traumatic stress.
