Very strange, ground uplift in my backyard!

Very strange, ground uplift in my backyard!

I just walked outside to my corner market/gas station for a cup of Java, on the way walking across the gravel behind my complex! The ground started collapsing under my feet dropped over a inch almost like i was falling thru thin ice.. also notice a 1/4 in crack in the surface of the gravel that ran almost 100 feet.. never in my life seen this phenom before????? anybody else???

Normally I just notice pot holes, but this winter it seems everywhere I look the ground is expanding and moving upward.
