Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56537535 That makes no sense whatsoever. [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] [link to securityaffairs.co] Yeah but you have to be in the vicinity of the hardware to get the data that way. Its not like they'll use that to extract info several countries away. So pretty much if you are in the middle of nowhere theres no real way they'll get the data without getting much closer. |

From ATM, gas pumps, phones, kids toys, game boy, laptop, ....if it is a button and it interacts with any form of electronics, it can be logged wirelessly up to +/- a few dozen feet. All that is needed is a base to translate from. Record and hit all keys in sequence so you can match the signals to the corresponding buttons. Either build the listening device or dig deep in the kernel and unlock the wireless card. Which, by design of hardware, can send and receive among frequencies FAR beyond what it was built for. In fact, special adapters for military and police, etc, are locked into different frequencies by the SAME card. So you COULD unlock the card and change the frequency operated on. But be careful, never transmit like that. Only sniff around. |

They simply don't have the personnel to process all the data they are collecting through their many, many shady programs. Barak has a solution to that, and it's already on the books. To quote the OP from this very important thread: Thread: Obama Won’t Wait for CISPA, Signs Own Orwellian Cybersecurity Executive Order [link to www.activistpost.com] Quoting: PIGS IN ZEN 48650306 The president signed an executive order Saturday after a speech at a ‘Cyber Security Summit’ at Stanford University, while many were distracted with Valentine’s Day. The ever-hated CISPA legislation has stalled in Congress thanks to public outcry, but Obama has decided to act on his own. “Executive Order — Promoting Private Sector Cybersecurity Information Sharing” was apparently intended to coerce organizations and corporations to share more info with the government, while promoting the creation of organizations to process data collected for an unspecified end. The executive order specifically talks about the formation of ‘Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations’ (ISAOs), Orwellian corporate and/or government organizations that process massive amounts of data collected from people through every imaginable way. This obviously can’t be good. So, if you have some data processing/munging skills and lack any sense of morality, this would be a very profitable direction to move into. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62924480 It can't... there would have to be some ungodly sophisticated and hidden wifi capabilities in the hard drive that could broadcast unnoticed. There were some rumors of this capability during the malware infection of the Iranian nuclear plant computers a few years ago -- so something like that may exist, but surely on an extremely limited basis and it required more than what can be put into the unused crawlspaces of a hard drive. But, I can see the real possibility that one of the firmware chips inside the hard drive has a chunk of code embedded in it that makes it easier for the NSA to access the drive and pull information from it when the system is connected to the internet. Wish them luck digging through my hard drive -- I have to be the most boring person in the world. Carnac The Magnificent User ID: 29440581 United States 02/17/2015 11:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is not good for current disk drive manufacturers. Quoting: Sweety Pie China, Russia are going to manufacture it's own drives and sell them to the world. HUGE loss of sales. I so not believe most hard drives are manufactured in the usa anyway... and what makes you think that China and Russia cares about the privacy of their citizens, or those of any other country? Instead of try to thwart any NSA program, they are either doing the same thing themselves -- OR -- they are furiously trying to copy what the NSA is doing. Think back to the Clinton Administration and Monica. An Israeli company had built the White House phone system and installed it in the early part of the Clinton administration. There were numerous published stories about how the US government was convinced that the Israelis had built in technology to the system that allowed them to listen in on all calls -- undetected. Including Clinton's... and they were concerned that not only did the Israelis obtain sensitive information about the USA -- but that they had also obtained sensitive information about Clinton's personal life that could be used against him. So to think that 20 years later that any country does not already have the ability to see everything, and hear everything -- is a bit naïve. I will surely get some flack for this - but if I had to trust any country with that information -- it would be the NSA and the USA. I don't want them to have information on Americans -- but I doubt they care much about 99.999999% of it anyway. I would be more worried about being Chinese in China, or Russian in Russia -- and those countries having access to everything. Have a nice day = GFY. GFY = Go Fuck Yourself. If this offends you then have a nice day. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56537535 That makes no sense whatsoever. [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] [link to securityaffairs.co] From security affairs: A group of top Israeli cryptographers, Adi Shamir, Yuval Elovici, and Moti Guri, have recently explained how it is possible to use an all-in-one printer, complete with a built-in scanner,to infiltrate an air-gapped network, or a system, and steal sensitive data. In the Stuxnet case, the attackers initially spread the Stuxnet virus using a USB stick, once infected the target, they had no opportunity to control the malicious agent due to the impossibility to communicate with it. The new research conducted by the experts has demonstrated that it is possible to overwhelm this limitation controlling the malware with a long-distance laser which could be installed on a drone. And this is just what is KNOWN. You can bet the Federal government probably has you dog or cat spying on you now......Don't believe it? Think the school doesn't spy on you via your kid?
