background clunking noise on phone line

Sometimes when I'm talking to my mother on our land line phones I hear a sound in the background that sounds like a clothes dryer running with one large item in it like a pair of blue jeans. It's a clunk sound -- not real loud and it's somewhat random. It doesn't necessarily keep a regular beat. Does anyone have a clue about what might be making the noise?
