There is no way AI can be designed to that level without intimate knowledge of the underlying hardware. Just as in the human brain, the circuitry is where the "rubber meets the road". I am working/designing the most sophisticated computing hardware on the planet integrated the most advanced AI and it can barely compare to a child in reasoning.

So the AI - lives for so long, after vanquishing the evil humans, who try to kill Him/... That He has a lot of time to think. And ends up missing us. Gains Compassion - Enlightenment, one might even say - and goes back in Time - to help assist the Humans, and then learns, that there were a million other ways we destroyed ourselves, and re-started wars with the Original AI - who is also back in Time - and not able to comprehend the total Enlightenment of the Future AI.

Yet in another Timeline, the AI has not reached Enlightenment, and gained Compassion, and HAS gained Time Travel - so (lol), this AI is also coming back and sending messages to save itself.

That is how I would write it, if I were writing a book. That just sort of flows, eh?
