Microsoft gifting Windows 10 for FREE even Pirates. Keep away from Win 10! | |

I'm a relative geek, and had always wanted to like Linux, but it's only with the release of Linux Mint that it's become useable, to my mind. I still run a pirated version of Win XP (Black Edition, you can find it for free via torrents), but finally the Linux world has caught up and now surprassed Windows. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68639955 As a cautionary tale to Windows users, try installing CyberGhost VPN, then get a firewall that watches when any process attempts to take a screenshot of your system and send it on to whomever...I liked CyberGhost until I saw it screenshotting my desktop and trying to call home. Reasons to like Linux; it's free, it's now more useable, imo, than Windoze, and you can avoid such horror stories as I just recounted by using the command line. God! I wish I knew how to do what you are saying to do. I've got nothing but problems with Win8, and I figure it's just a matter of time before they MAKE us "upgrade" to Win10....and like the op, I figure it's a really BAD SIGN if they are even letting pirates have it free...... The operating system is free because they sell you apps or free games that cost you 10 times as much to unlock all the levels as if you bought the game outright. It's freeware. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 64805035 Canada 03/19/2015 09:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well people like free shit, the problem is the long term cost will be huge. I found this comment on an article about win 10 being free and I think this guys nails down what is coming with win 10. "As for the PC side, MSFT knows they lost the trust of the vast majority of PC users with Windows 8 and the vision they are still trying to force on everyone. Their only hope is to give it away for free, hope enough people upgrade and then slowly force their cloud, touch based garbage on everyone all while under the belief that they need the make the OS to do more and more for us. Also, who DOESNT know that MSFT is going to turn the OS into a subscription based OS for revenue? Serioulsy...its been in the corporate vision section of their website for a year now and even Nadella put it in his letter to the company when announcing the layoffs...he said the future of the PC OS is a subscription based future" [link to www.fool.com] And there it is in black and white "PC OS is a subscription based future" |

If you are REALLY concerned about security (which I seriously doubt any of you are...how many of you have PGP public key ring?) Get you a good stateful firewall - their are many that you plug directly in-line with your router (and they aren't expensive) to stop any spurious connections to and from your box. You can setup IP and domain name blocking so any .gov or .mil or *.Microsoft.com domains will NEVER connect or communicate with your box. Lumia 430, 70 bucks with W10. Hololens with W10. Xbox One connected with W10. New browser with W10. Cortana with W10 (the most awesome part of this) Gates working into a super personal agent capable of stuff not even Apple can imagine. Full compatibility between devices (PC, Laptops, Phones, Tablets, Video game Console) And more stuff to come, ask yourself why in W8 they did not listen costumer about Start menu, and other stuff, but in W10 it seems they are starting to care. Or is Microsoft trying to destroy all opposition, trying to make you think Singularity will be awesome, or it's working super hard with NSA/OrOtherSuperSecretAgency to create one of the most evil software in the world. |

It's seamless, lightening fast, and gorgeous!! Good people of GLP -- it's time to dump the corporate surveillance arm of the Big Brother State and go 100% open source!! Anonymous Coward User ID: 64805035 Canada 03/19/2015 09:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | to me win 7 is still perfect. It runs all my apps and games. I don't have to have a windows logon or to use their windows store. As soon as I seen that windows store I got a little sick feeling in my stomach when I was trying out my dads win 8.x os.. I get that they wanna keep up with androids play store and apple store but what the fuck, those are mobile os'es. I don't want that bull shit on my home pc which is why windows 7 is perfect imo. I think they whole thing will shift into blocking piracy at the os level and they will eventually require authorization for every app installed, probably will block torrents and other shit. This might even be in development for the new internet neutrality and taxing system they got a hard on over. And I fully expect to see everyone have to log in to use a pc on the internet so you are tracked heavily in what you do.. I remember years ago bill gates had a hard on for keyboards with finger print scanning tech to log on to a pc, they said in the future that it was coming and I think they have big plans for this new win 10 os.. |

Well, your luck is in as Microsoft says it will give even the most piratical of Chinese users an upgrade copy of its next operating system for the bargain price of absolutely free. Update: Microsoft has confirmed that all pirates, wherever they’re located, will get a free upgrade. [link to torrentfreak.com] They are giving it away because they know they will lose major market share to free operating systems like Linux, and Google's operating systems. Windows 8 was poorly received and they couldnt recover from its damaged public view. Google has rapidly outstripped both Microsoft and Mozilla in the browser department with little effort. So the same can easily happen with operating systems, and thats something that Microsoft doesnt want to happen. Its definitely a pre-emptive attack on other OS developers and its a smart move on Microsoft's part. Its the first time they've actually done something intelligent and made the right business choice. |

It's no different than what they've done with Office 365, or what Adobe has done with their Creative Cloud applications. There's no way to move to a subscription with the existing OS versions, thus the "giveaway". It's just a loss leader to try to establish a new model. It is also getting increasingly difficult to develop applications for the increasingly disparate UIs across versions, and so this will help developers more easily write to a common interface across touch and mouse/keyboard interfaces.
