I'm an atheist so I couldn't give a fuck about religious bullshit. I think it should all be abolished but this country was founded on Christian values. It is what made America the GREATEST nation on earth and although it is time to move on from religion and bullshit we must respect our heritage.

Back in 1970 when I was a kid, I refused to say the pledge because - and I explained this to the teacher at the time, who was cool with my reasoning - I didn't fully understand it. I didn't know what it truly meant to "pledge allegiance to the flag" (as opposed to the country itself, etc.), and had some issues with "indivisible" as well. Not that I didn't understand the word "indivisible" mind you, but rather that it just didn't seem to be true given the 50 states and all.

But I went to a very strange school. You couldn't tell just by looking, i.e. the "strangeness" was in the excellent teachers who pushed us WAY beyond what is normally considered comprehensible by 1st-graders. It was a public school - just a "normal" elementary school in the Dallas school system, however (and I swear this is true!) thanks to whomever was in charge at the time we started studying the fundamentals of government and constitutional law in the 1st grade. I kid you not. Which is why I had trouble with the pledge.

It even got pretty meaty - we studied the whole Constitution, not just someone's summary of it, and went into detail about the ramifications of things like the "Commerce Clause" (and the abuse of said clause), meaning my vocal opposition to "Wickard v Filburn" dates back to at least the early '70s. And by "vocal opposition" I mean I was occasionally called upon to amuse guests by voicing such opinions at my dad's law firm parties.

My problem with the pledge lasted until about the 5th or 6th grade, when I'd grown up enough and reasoned it out enough to decide it was OK, and I could join in without it simply being a "mindless drivel" chant.

I've been happy to recite the pledge ever since, because like I said, it isn't mindless if you mean it.
