Japan to build massive sea wall to combat tsunami threat
SENDAI, Japan – Four years after a towering tsunami ravaged much of Japan's northeastern coast, efforts to fend off future disasters are focusing on a nearly 250-mile chain of cement sea walls, at places nearly five stories high.

Opponents of the $6.8 billion plan argue that the massive concrete barriers will damage marine ecology and scenery, hinder vital fisheries and actually do little to protect residents who are mostly supposed to relocate to higher ground. Those in favor say the sea walls are a necessary evil, and one that will provide some jobs, at least for a time.

In the northern fishing port of Osabe, Kazutoshi Musashi chafes at the 12.5-meter (41-foot)-high concrete barrier blocking his view of the sea.

"The reality is that it looks like the wall of a jail," said Musashi, 46, who lived on the seaside before the tsunami struck Osabe and has moved inland since.

Pouring concrete for public works is a staple strategy for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its backers in big business and construction, and local officials tend to go along with such plans.

Nearly the whole Coast in Japan had/ have this Walls already,
the main Problem in 2011 was that this Walls was to small
because the whole Tohoku Coastline slipped off for more than 200 Cm.

I am against and for new Walls,
we need to see the whole Data Sets
(Location, Population, Age, other Possibilities) for a better Analysis!

Normally there will be no Tsunami of this Force for ca. 1.000 Years
and in that Area of Tohoku!

FYI: many Buildings where we see huge Suffering are now dismantled
or in the Process of it.

It is a very sentmental Moment for this affected People but they want
and they need to go on.

probably a lot cheaper to build cheap homes, that yes, can be destroyed easily, but rebuilt just as easily, and educate the population to RUN for the hills when they're told.

on too many of those vids, people STAYED in harms way, especially drivers

trying to resist mother nature is pure folly imho. we have to live with her, not hide her behind a wall

maybe build strategically placed evacuation towers, that are wave resistant that the population can flee to, in areas without high enough hills too?

will people even remember this wave the next time a big one comes along though?

Actually the Group of old People who couldn't walk or run and Children under 12 had the biggest Lost but we all need to be happy that we didn't
saw a mucher higher Toll of Victims.

18.000 Victims comes with a lot of Suffering but this Numbers could be much higher when you see the Numbers of the People who escaped in Time!
