Oil boom and busts are nothing new by a long shot as anyone who's been in the business for a while knows. Quoting: Shiva ascendant It has more to do with Saudi Arabia manipulating the price downwards to make shale oil exploitation in the United States unprofitable [to retain Saudi Arabian market share] and to attack Russia's oil-based domestic spending budget. Oil companies are in the business of making money. When oil got super expensive the demand went down, people found ways to lower their use. The oil companies lock in the price for the near future by buying futures. Since the decline in price they've not lowered production. They're storing in tanks and ships all over the country and now they are full. We're about to see another leg down in oil prices. All of this is the market doing what it does, it has nothing to do with your lunatic conspiracy theory. this is true. Simple supply and demand. All you oil war stories are more elaborate than it really is. Not only have people found ways to cut use, but companies are afraid to use it in production on down the line to transport, because they could end up paying big money in whatever carbon taxes are out there. |

It costs upwards of $500,000 for an ultra deepwater floater drilling rig so offshore oil is expensive. Not sure how many barrels they get per day and I'm sure it varies by location and depth. The stock prices of companies that do this, like Noble and Transocean, have fallen to levels I cannot believe. The companies were trading over $40 per share a year and a half ago and now are about $14. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 60126296 Mexico 03/22/2015 09:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thousands of jobs in the IT World are being wiped out and going to places like HCL INDIA!!!! Our politicians and corporate america has sold us out once again. IT is going the way manufacturing went. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 64469937 It really, really sucks that the American IT industry is now being decimated like this. Working in IT (particularly as systems and network administrators) used to be high-paying, prestigious employment. A lot of people got schooled and trained for IT back in the 90s and early 2000s. But not many of them really seem to have a grasp on it nor do they work well with people. But as long as they do it for less than the more qualified personnel (or via outsourcing) companies hire them. What you end up with is big companies that are willing to live with lackluster IT support and farm it all out to the lowest bidders. All this while sabatoging their own internal efficiency and productivity. Why do you think Sony, Target, Anthem, etc. were so easily hacked? It seems that IT workers have now become the "janitors of all things electronic" in the corporate workplace. They are the one department in which it's perfectly acceptable to treat like total dog shit on a daily basis. Yep. Totally agree with you. But look around you. Do you have an iPhone? A Galaxy Note? Where do you think your favorite toys are made? Are you on Facebook? Do you use Instagram? How do you think they stay in business even while their services are basically free for you? How do you think these companies keep the bottom line black? Why do you think the SF Bay Area is so flooded with startups and tech companies, promising the most high tech future to the world, at the lowest cost? How do you think those smug, hypocritical tech tycoons keep getting richer and richer while more and more of us keep getting poorer? Do you love being on the internet? Are you one of those who can't imagine life without the 'net? At the end of the day, it's our own mindless, rapacious consumerism and materialism that's sent our very own livelihoods abroad. And it's also the very same internet you think is sooooo indispensable that's serving as the primary tool for cutting jobs HERE and sending them overseas instead. It's called CHANGE, and it's not always for the better. The thing is, I see no way out of it. More and more of our IT and other service jobs are going to go to other countries, go to places that would be grateful for what for us would be slave wages. It's a bleeding that I can see no end of, as long as the internet is there. Did you vote for Obama? If you did, do you remember who his first official state dinner in the White House was with? INDIA. With the very same Prime Minister who chortled with glee as he admitted that a lot of U.S. jobs were now going to his country. If you voted for BO, pat yourself in the back if you can, then pick up a hammer, and then pound it on your balls till they break. Stupid fuckwits like you shouldn't be allowed to breed. Remember this began happening mid January through February. February was when the nation was shut down for a month because of snow job after snow job. Every sector of the ecconomy showed growth downturns reflecting the inability to maintain normal operations for profit in the facr of such severe weather. Housing starts were off 17% year before. When approached to do a consulting gig at the IRS in like 2009 - 2010, I had the apparent audacity, since I was on the bench, to ask what the project was about and how it would benefit the taxpayers....how dare i? mind you internal efficiencies can benefit the taxpayer by saving overall cost of ops, but bc of my questions, I was never called back by the woman who was going to get the answers for me. This may hv been one of those work within the system to change it for good, but I had had a prior circle jerk of a project at the firm and wanted to ensure I wld be adding value. Soon thereafter I got the boot...laid off with a decent 6 weeks pay and benefits. then the weird ass DHS gig, which was my last consulting gig so far....tho it was really more staff aug, which I don't like. Anyway, apparently never question the ethics of taxpayer ROI with some people. Can't say it was the firm, when it was an individual, but that firm did lay me off...oh, well. Ethical capitalism isn't what some people are interested in apparently. I think the firm has been scrambling in the fed space and we'll that's bc most of the people they allowed to leave and ones they let go.
