we buy cars from japan, are there any checks done on them when the arrive before we buy them? if they are radioactive it would be nice to know before we put our families in them for the next 10years.

They probably have the same level of radiation as the thousands of used cars exported by Japan every year.

I would really want to have the car checked - any car I might be considering buying.

New Cars are always free of Contamination,
the used Cars traded via the big Auctions are tested
when they come from the Fukushima-, Miyagi- and Ibaraki Prefectures
and are free too.

There was a few Cases in 2011-2014:

In total, since the 2011 nuclear meltdown, the Russians say they have found 697 contaminated used vehicles and shipping containers carrying second-hand spare parts from Japan to the port of Vladivostok.

In 2012, Russian authorities sent back 300 Japanese cars they said registered unsafe levels of radiation. In February, Kyrgyzstan also returned an undisclosed number of cars to Japan that reportedly exceeded permissible limits for radiation

Russia continues to ban the import of 591 different kinds of equipment from Japan due to possible radioactive contamination, the customs service said.

Russia is popular dumping ground for used left-side autos from Japan and it is common to see cars with steering wheels on the wrong side on roads in the Far East and Siberia which are built for right-hand traffic. According to the Japanese Ministry of Finance, Japan exported 131,999 used cars to Russia in 2012.
...
Japan’s shipping companies have voluntarily put the radiation level limit on used cars for exports to be less than 0.3 microsieverts based on the government guidelines since the nuclear accident. But since Russia has a tighter regulation, they started adopting a limit of 0.2 microsieverts for cars to Russia in order to avoid the extra cost incurred when cars are sent back.

My new Nissan doesn't need headlights at night, it glows in the dark. About 200 mpg.
