I remember him singing folk songs, reading poetry and wearing berets and love beads in the early 60s. By the mid to late 60's, he was founding some of the first communes. He is still close friends with Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm.

Hippies were NOT about drugs, although the Beatniks did use heroin (not all) the hippies were more about resisting corruption than getting stoned, they were drugged to prevent sucsess in their attempt to not lose their virtue to the miitary/indistrial/pharmaceutical complex.

Some draft dogers went to Canada where they were recieved and loved and CAnadians enbraced them and also grew their hair long as a move of solidarity and to help them blend in.

There are few ppl ALIVE today who have a clue about hippies, they think its about sex and drugs, and the rave culture has fallen prey to the pharmaceutical industry as slaves.

I don't know your age OP but if you are old enough, you may have met or seen my uncle. He traveled through Mexico in '68 in an old 53 Chevy pickup with a log cabin built on the back. I've run into many people over the years who have met him.

There was no involvement in Vietnam except some "advisors" to Nhu's staff in early 1960s. It was Democrat LBJ who ramped up involvement in 1964 using the Gulf of Tonkin as an excuse.

The original hippies were walking around with beads and hair long before that, smoking pot and singing folk songs that did not have anything to do with war.

They did not even start the draft until 1970, although many young men had enlisted.

TRADITIONAL VALUES Vs. SEX, DRUGS and ROCK & ROLL

The so-called “hippies” became famous for questioning and even discarding traditional values, seeking “alternative” lifestyles to what was seen as conformity.
Most “Hippies” were in fact masquerading as hippies after it became a fad, they were collection of lost souls, not able to see the blessing of traditional values.
The REAL hippies were not a Canadian Phenomena, (except for some draft dodgers in exile), but were War Protesters and Draft Dodgers and Activists in the States who were part of the “human rights” movement.
Canada had no draft and was very indifferent to seriousness and magnitude of the situation, including the war, racism, and the human rights movement. They watched it on TV. while in the States it was REAL.
People lived on the streets and in parks not because they were BUMS or incapable of more but out of their moral conviction which forced them to live a life underground.

I became what I thought a hippie was based on the friendliness of the “hippie-community” (brother/sister), the spirituality, the focus on values and human rights, and promoting communism in America, having lived on a commune in Perth County Ontario.
The thing is that everyone was stoned in those days. It made the “anything goes” attitude alright, but people were being abused in the name of spiritual revolution.

The truth is that all the hippies who weren’t as stupid as they were stoned soon realized that traditional values for the most part have reasons to exist and those reasons came from thousands of years of trial and error learning, and from roles dictated by nature. Many hippies turned to other cultures, religions, and countries (as did I) only to find that in essence the whole world is the same and that these values in question are so simply based on family pride, honor, and integrity.... embracing the love of family, and celebrating this love through song, dance, and culture, to express the sense of pride it instills in us. Those who seek an alternative to this will only hurt themselves and those around them.

The hippies I really don’t like are too stoned and/or stupid to see and understand the reasons behind traditional values and how nature and eons of trial and error have developed these values.
They have their own “agenda” and use spirituality and non-conformity as an excuse to fill their carnal appetite while destroying the feelings of others.

People who talk about the value of “community” need to remember that “family” is the foundation of community.
