After our tube mill laid off around 400, I saw houses pop up for sale at a rate of 4 a day.. now the market is saturated.. Wait a few months and they will be practically giving them away cause there won't be anyone left working to buy them.. And to the people blaming right or left, its both.. The plan was always to collapse the u.s because it is to free and the PTB hate that about America. If America was like china, it would be thriving.. Because that is exactly where they wanna take the u.s, into a fascist socialist nightmare. |

Quoting: Daveinspruce 48015057 I know up here we are in a lot of trouble. Oil workers? Steel workers? It's time for these folks to get competitive in today's job market and look at the software industry High paying jobs building with your hands are a thing of the past I wouldn't get in to software either because your job will either be a) shipped to India or b) taken by an Indian HB 1 worker here who can be paid 1/2 your salary. |

The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker has announced it will temporarily idle its Granite City Works operations and the layoffs will start May 28. US Steel sells steel pipes and tubes to oil and gas drillers. As oil prices have plummeted, the company has already made layoff announcements in Alabama, Minnesota and Texas, affecting more than 4,500 workers in total. The Illinois plant is the primary flat-roll supplier of Lone Star Tubular Operations in Texas, where US Steel has already announced it would lay off 318 workers. US Steel's CEO Mario Longhi told investors in an earnings call in January the company would idle Alabama's Fairfield blast furnace until orders picked up. In Alabama, 300 jobs will be added at US Steel after it adds an electric arc furnace to replace its blast furnace. Last week, county commissioners unanimously approved about $14 million in tax abatements over the course of 10 years. With the newly announced project, total employment at US Steel in Alabama will be around 600, instead of around 300. The company cited challenging market conditions as the reason for Wednesday's layoffs, including low steel prices, unfair trade, and fluctuating oil prices. i think people forget how much steel china manufactures..china manufactures anything between 50-705 of world steel... no company even in third world can compete with that forget USA ,even indian govt steel companies can never compete with chinese steel actually it's our good buddy south korea that's illegally dumping steel over here [link to www.bloomberg.com] |

High dollar makes US Steel exports uncompetitive. Illinois' INSANELY high energy prices, carbon taxes, state income taxes, and some really idiotic pro-union laws make it uncompetitive to make almost ANYTHING in Illinois now. CAUSE, MEET EFFECT On the bright side, Illinois will have a bunch of new EBT Card recipients and life-time Democrat slave voters! It's not only this. US Steel has always been low quality. It's been compared to Chinese crap metal. I mean seriously, even the buildings in NYC are using steel from Europe. Not only that, US Steel has been subsidized, protected and funded by the government constantly. So good riddance, I hope that company fucking dies already. I mean Jesus, the Japanese bought out part of US Steel and they're using the same factory to produce better quality steel, that US Steel management couldn't even come close too. That's how bad this company is ran. |
