Next comes the face of a woman of their mother's race.

how do you judge what a newborn prefers? by the calmness and strength with which it feeds.

It feeds best in its mother's arms, then the arms of a woman of the same race, the least best in the arms of a woman of a different race.

even a few hours old, humans have survival instincts. They know that a person of their own race is more likely to be family to them than someone that is not.
